I know exactly what Luann is talking about. I have relatives who keep their houses hot in order to be thrifty and they are unpleasant places to be in the heat of summer.

She just needed to use the right argument.

I find leaving my house at 76 or 77 works, but we have ceiling fans. I sympathize with both father and daughter in this Sunday foible strip.

It may be a joke to Frank—and to others on this board—but summer heat is no joke to those of us who can’t stand it. I live in South Texas, where summer temperatures go up to over 100 degrees. In fact, according to the forecast for my area from The Weather Channel website, the highs will be over 100 degrees for most of the next 10 days. It’s not just buckets of sweat I have to deal with here. I’ve also gotten headaches, a symptom of heat exhaustion. I’ve gotten them not only when I’ve exerted myself in the heat, but even just by being out for an extended period of time, which is what happened a few weeks ago. In addition, we’re also at risk for getting skin cancer, including melanoma.

Yes, Luann is being portrayed here as a “drama queen” purely for laughs, but living in an area known for scorching summers where you’re at risk for heat stroke and/or skin cancer is no joke.

It gets well over 100 here. Our house easily stays 74 to 75. Navajo white exterior with white trim, Low E3 windows, and 20" of insulation above the upper story.

My wife has a two degree operating range. If it is below 74, she is freezing. If it is above 76, she is burning up…

We drop to 68 at late at night and early in the morning we turn it to 72

Until Luann starts paying the bills then she would have a right to complain until then keep her mouth shut.

78F? That’s about 26 C. My car AC is set on that to keep me cool in the Australian summer. Anything below that is cold.

If Luann is sweating that profusely then the temp probably is set pretty high, and her points about why have an air conditioner if you don’t use it is valid. She could present her case a tad less dramatically, but… then it wouldn’t have much comedic value.

Love Luann’s expressions in the second and third frames. She’s a doll – a very human one.

I can understand if one has a health condition, that a warm house can be uncomfortable and even hazardous. It is a fine line between paying the bill and pleasant temperature.

I have no central A/C, I have a window unit in the bedroom that I set to 72F. During the day, I reside in my garden gazebo with a fan. Works for me.

A bit too high. We set ours at 75.2 F (24 C). But then we usually have a mild climate to heat is a pain.

To all commenters. There are many strategies to keep cool and avoid hyperthermia. Seems those born after central air conditions was available have never heard of them.

I’m the cheapest person in the world, but I don’t skimp on air conditioning in July. You aren’t poor, Frank.

Actually, I HATE air conditioning. Never had it when I lived in NY. Just fans. Now living in Florida, it’s a necessary evil. Not really for heat…but for mildew. We still have ceiling fans and like someone above said…during the day it’s at 76. At night it’s 72. Perfect range. Oh, and we leave windows and doors open. I didn’t move to Florida to live in a hermetically sealed box. Luckily, the house stays very cool. New construction; keeps the temp very stable inside.

I did not grow up with AC in any of the houses we lived in, just fans and open windows, I lived in Hawaii for several years and we just opened the windows there also and let the trade winds blow through. I guess it is all about what you are used to and I find that I can NOT live with out the AC now days and if for some reason it is out I can not stand it. Dropping the temp from 78 to 77 is good.

Some of us deal with the dry, hot, hot² heat….but also not to be forrgotten, is when you add steamy, wet humidity to the equation!

Recently weren’t there blackouts in Southern California due to excessive air conditioner use during an extreme heatwave? Such blackouts are likely to be more common in the future.

Life is short. Might as well be as comfortable as you can be. Reasonably.

Can’t you just visualize it……..temperature so uncomfortable that even Count Dracula has to move from his casket to a locker in the morgue to get a good night’s sleep?

I have relatives who keep their AC close to 60, it can get outright COLD in their house, they compensate for the electricity by turning off most of the lights.

That sweaty body looks kinda attractive.

78 is a pretty good temp to me.

Luann needs to learn about this intetesting new concept called “antiperspirant.” Also, she can’t deal with 78? That’s hardly in the 100s. She’s a real wimp if 78 has her melting.

In the winter I heat up to 67-69. In the summer, I cool down to 77-80.

Perhaps, Luann needs to quit ranting. Anger tends to warm you up.

I get cold at 78. Me and air conditioning don’t get along, I grew up without it. (Florida, for the record so I know what hot is.)
