Enough, Irma. Please explain what in the Hell Al Gray has done to “take care of you” and Gunther.
And how friggin’ gracious of him to “share is plans” with you two.
HELLO? Al’s not “sharing” he’s DICTATING, Irma !! Think about THAT as you gleefully condemn your son to eternal torture in the Gurst House Gulag with Les.
PS: You look like Charlie Brown wearing a curly wig in Panel #3!,
Well it looks like Gunther will actually move in with Les. I thought he’d decline and look for a place of his own or find another roommate. Bet they’ll fight over Tiffany.
I see drama for Irma on the horizon. When Anne made her comment to Les about her brother becoming “Mr. Goody Gray-Suit”, the deliberate play on his name, and him “becoming” that, indicates that he’s living under an alias (witness protection? Hiding from the law? Hiding from gangsters? Hiding from himself?) and reminding Les that she could blow their whole world up with what she knows if they ever go to the cops about her. Unfortunately, that now means blowing up Irma Berger’s world as well.
For those who read a lot of speculative fiction, the New York Times reports that Harlan Ellison passed away last Wednesday. (He used to say he’s come to anyone’s house who said he wrote science fiction, and hit them so hard their ancestors would die.) Isaac Asimov said of Ellison that he was only 5 foot 4, but he was 8 feet tall in talent…
Yes – There’s a nice undertow beneath several of the story lines. We may build up to a crowded room with three elephants before some of this sorts out.
Gunther had a governor put on his ’58 Edsel Ranger that limits it to a top speed of 40 miles per hour. The more he thinks about rooming with Les, the more his foot is backing away from the accelerator pedal. They should arrive in about 2 weeks.
Gunther, you don’t have to live with Les. Tell your mother and Al that you’ve decided it’s time to get your own place. It might be a tiny two-room studio but it’ll be yours.
And yeah, “share plans” is a weird way to talk about wedding plans. You’re both supposed to be involved in the planning.
So I guess the Brad and Toni storyline is just over?
IF the wedding actually takes place, then TJ can stop destroying the house and Brad and Toni can move into Irma’s old house. There are at least two bedrooms there and no renovation needed!
Les, may actually have more credibility than people give him credit for. At least he’s more realistic than his mama’s Gunther. Quit hanging onto your mothers apron strings!
Hmmm. “Tummy Flutters” about living with Al Gray? I probably should have skipped breakfast…. I feel rather nauseous.
So, perhaps we will see the guest house this week? Perhaps hear about more of the wedding plans?? Hmm.
I simply have a sense of doom about this whole thing now…. I have swung completely back over into the camp that Mr. Gray is REALLY bad news. With the way he encouraged his nephew to extort his own mother….. that just speaks to me that he has PLENTY of negative, nasty aspects to his personality… no matter how hidden they may have been.
1) Al gonna “share his plans” with them. At what point, if ever, does Al ask others what “They” think and what “They” want?
2) When Is Al going to sit down and have a one on one with his future son-in-law?
3) And How has Al “Taken Good care of them” when he barely talks to them?
Wait. Could it be that Al has been secretly taking care of the Berger family all long and that in reality, Al Gray IS Gunther’s Father, who has returned to make amends?
Oh Waitperson? COFFEE, Quickly! My head is spinning! In Fact. COFFEE for everyone Here, and put it on my tab! This is going to be a long week…..,
So the story turns from the unnecessary guest bedroom (Shannon could sleep in the living room) to the unnecessary guest house (for a whole lot less money, Gunther could live in the dorms for the rest of his college career, and Les could live in an apartment paid for by Mr. Gray). Although apparently we are supposed to be worked about about a possible conflict between Les and Gunther (two of the least pleasant characters in the strip), what seems to me to be more interesting is whether Gunther will ever shave or grow a beard. This permanent 3-days-of-stubble has to go one way or the other, G-man. Don’t show up for Mom’s wedding looking like you spent the weekend without washing your face!
I think JackieAnnie may be on to something regarding Irma’s house. We abruptly switched from the space dilemma (flood etc) in Brad, Toni and TJ’s place back to Al and Irma and their housing situation (unusual for Greg to leave off of an arc at a critical moment). Irma’s house will be vacant after the wedding, maybe before. Maybe Toni and Brad can buy it or just move into it with some arrangement. Maybe Al will strike up a conversation with Nancy at the Fuse where all these housing issues come to the table.
Al Gray: man of mystery, many “contacts”, con-artist sister, nephew on parole, questionable ethics, and most unusual……..he never says anything romantic to his lady.
Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Mrs. Berger does not love Mr. Gray? He doesn’t make her happy. She’s marrying him because she wants to be taken care of. Is this were at all realistic, she’ll be wanting out after a year or two of marriage. If that long.

Um, permits to build “guest” houses are not for permanent habitation. They are for occasional occupation, like weekends or two weeks in the summer.

These seemingly interrupted arcs must connect SOMEWHERE, SOMETIME. Though, frankly, I don’t see how the writer is going to do it.
