Mental institution should be pretty safe, considering not all gun owners suffer with mentally illness, but so far it appears those suffering with mental illness have done all the killing.
You forgot on the street. Last Saturday in Los Angeles, a 32-year-old man named Mohamad Mohamad repeatedly used his car to attempt to run over several Orthodox Jews as they left their synagogue after Shabbos services. Fortunately, his would be victims were able to get out of the way and the alleged assailant crashed his vehicle into a stop sign and was apprehended by the police.
I’m no fan of the current direction of the country and the hate, outrage, and ignorance of the rhetoric on all sides is pretty easy to see, however, to claim that we live in more dangerous times isn’t borne out by the evidence. No violent attack is ok, but to be completely safe we must give up a lot of liberty (and not just gun rights). It’s a trade off that we need to be a little more cautious about making, especially when we already live in remarkably safe times, despite media sensationalism telling us otherwise.
It has absolutely nothing to do with guns or gun control.
It has everything to do with morality and self-control.
American civil society existed quite well with gun ownership until the advent of “Progressive” Ideology and its foundation of Moral Relativism and the accompanying Entitlement Mentality.
There have always been instances of extreme violence where someone has no self-control, but the tools used to express that violence were just that: tools. The violence was caused by lack of self-control.
The rise in frequency and its spread is, I think, indicative of social decay from the erosion of civil society’s moral foundations.
The teaching of self-control and respect for others has been replaced with the teaching of self-gratification and an Entitlement Mentality that professes that “The ends justify the means”.
Sadly this is true. Even if you stay locked inside your home you can be the victim of a home invasion. I try to not think about it, and just live my life.
So many of those places are “Gun Free Zones” which do not stop criminals, only law abiding citizens. 98% of mass shootings (as defined as 4 or more) occurred in Gun Free Zones.
Bottom line the problem is the people, not the weapon. We need to improve the mental health available for people in this country. Take away every gun and the violence will still continue as demonstrated in Japan and England. Before Columbine in 1999 back in the old days, we carried rifles in the back of out pickup trucks to school. My high school had a shooting range. Something changed prior to 1999, whether relatively immediately prior or several years prior. Some point to the rise of “shooter” video games. Maybe. Maybe it was the parents abandonment of their children to raise and entertain themselves which led to the growth of gang involvement. I don’t know what happened but something definitely changed and it wasn’t guns.
It seems the problem now more than ever is evil people on the loose. Perhaps if we could keep people in jail until they are no longer a threat rather than letting them loose and hoping for the best.
And there is very rarely any trouble at gun shows, because almost every one of the attendees is a law abiding citizen, who only wants firearms for self-defense and/or hunting. And the vendors are all armed, so the criminals know better than to start something.
Just in time for the holidays; Peace on Earth, Goodwill to White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Men with a six or seven figure annual income and really good bodyguards and receipts for their correct political contributions.
Feeling safe is a soft and squishy concept. You can “not feel safe” but be surrounded by a ring of Police. On the other hand you can take responsibility for yourself and take the steps YOU feel necessary to be safe and comfortable in most places where you go. At least for the last 200+ years we have enjoyed the right to defend ourselves and the government is limited in what they can do to take that away from you, although some NE states and CA believe you do not have that right, for example the famous case of the woman having been raped in her own home, hid in the cellar with a gun and shot the perp when he came for her a second time and was sent to prison because she “could have escaped” out a locked cellar door. A cartoon is not an ideal place to discuss this thorny issue.
I feel safe while birding, hiking & kayaking out in the wilds of nature. Except if it’s a red state — I will no longer set foot in a red state. So Pig, please add red state to your cross-off list.
Seems to me as if Ole Stephan Pastis for got a few other places where it is not safe, and one has to fear being attacked.
On the sidewalk going to attend a Trump Rally.Going on almost any college or university campus to speak ideas in opposition to the looney left.Writing a book, expressing an opinion, or publishing a paper that suggests the looney left is insane in promoting more than two genders.
Blame the terrorists and the mentally ill who misuse guns. Blaming the gun makes as much sense as blaming cars for the people drunk drivers kill and maim. Ban guns, and killers will just find other ways to kill.
Idaho is now an open carry state. When they passed that several years ago, armed white men started attending legislative meetings in the public galleries overhead. Guns were quickly outlawed inside government buildings.
While one may not FEEL safe, the reality is that we are VERY safe, generally, especially compared to past generations and many other countries. Not to say that we cannot make improvements; however, haste and fear produce poor decisions, divisiveness, and giving up of freedom. In this the USA’s season of Thanksgiving, how much better to recognize with gratitude how well we have it.
And yet I feel safe in any of those places because I have a pretty fair understanding of statistics. I feel much less safe driving on the highway since the proliferation of assault cell phones, however. There should be a law to ban all semi-automatic texting!
As we all know, even research into gun violence is exactly the same as abolishing the second amendment and the total confiscation of all guns (except from criminals, of course).
.
And, never forget that OBAMA IS COMING TO TAKE YOUR GUNS!
I weep for all the Jews who were killed in the synagogues at Pittsburgh and elsewhere. And for everyone else finding themselves at the point of a gun and shot in supposedly peaceful, civilized places by political terrorists. The rest of us can just cower.
This is so sad. So depressing. Can we all just step back and appreciate Stephan Pastis, with strips like these, and his ability to make you just stop and think. These rare strips are shining examples the greatest of what can be achieved with a comic strip.
It’s not really all that bad, Pig. Just stay out of the four or five worst cities (by murder rate) and chances are good that you’ll be fine. Now come out from under the desk!
Funny, most of those on that list are “gun-free zones”, or, in reality, “unarmed victim/criminal free-fire zones”. … or in locations with strict gun control laws — Same difference
Mr. Pastis makes a good point, but he left out the most dangerous place in America and indeed, the whole world – the womb. Since Roe v. Wade about 60 million preborn people have been deliberately killed by abortion in the USA. That’s also close to the YEARLY TOTAL of abortions in the world. This number is roughly the same number of people killed in the entirety of World War II, which lasted about 6 years. Extreme violence against completely innocent, defenseless, preborn people, only begets more and more violence. We reap what we sew. The earth’s hundreds of millions of people murdered in the womb and out of the womb are asking God for justice. One day God will ensure they will get it.
Except we live in the safest time ever. Being scared isn’t based in reality, it’s the result of a sleazy and amoral Media desperate to get your attention so that they can sell you crap you don’t need.
I’m reminded of Charles Laughton’s portrayal of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, pleading only for “sanctuary” from the mob. As bellringer in the church tower, even he knew that he was supposed to be in a safe place. It was not to be then, nor is it in today’s world. Quasimodo’s threat was an angry (and ignorant) mob. Those leaders who pander to the whims of the NRA have no capacity to think of a solution, just as they lack the compassion to utter a meaningful prayer that the madness will end.
Guys, you’re trolling yourselves if you think that getting rid of guns gets rid of killers.
Criminals have ALWAYS got their hands on whatever they want; they don’t abide by the law, that’s what makes them CRIMINALS, you sheep. You take the guns, the only people you take them from are the people who abide by the law, leaving them defenseless.
Why don’t you research how many lives are saved by guns yearly (being fired, not even to mention just being brandished)? Why don’t you research what the UK is like without guns? That’s right, a handgun… not a shotgun tucked in her purse, Biden you idiot. Talk about equalizing. Without a gun, the average woman is not going to make it in a physical, violent situation with an average man. With a gun, her chances go up by 500%.
Would you all just quit being scared rabbits and get educated? There are two kinds of people in this gun-control debate: those who have guns, those who are educated and trained and knowledgeable, and those who are scared, acting out of emotion and fear, and don’t even know what “semi-automatic” means.
Wake up and speak logically and rationally, not out of emotion and fear and ignorance.
Thank you for this strip. I wish the people like the guy just above this blaming people for being afraid of what our actual current reality is would wake up. I live in California, but a dear friend in Pittsburgh lost a lot of people dear to her. We are all connected and every senseless death should be important to every one of us.
Just so everybody gets to see just another in a long list of why you need to have a gun to protect yourself and your loved ones. I hope she had it on her and didn’t have to go get it. Safest way to have a gun is POGO – Pants On, Gun On. Kids can’t access it and you are always ready.
An inmate who had escaped minutes earlier from a county jail in South Carolina was shot and killed by a woman after he kicked in her back door, the local sheriff said. The inmate was still in his orange jail jumpsuit and had grabbed a knife sharpening tool from the woman’s kitchen in Pickens as he headed toward her bedroom around 3 a.m. Tuesday, Pickens County Sheriff Rick Clark said.
“This was a big guy. If she hadn’t had a weapon there’s no telling what would have happened,” Clark said. “I gave her a big hug. I told her how proud I was of her.”
The woman was home alone and had gone through training to get a concealed weapons permit, Clark said.
Bruce McLaughlin Jr., 30, died from a gunshot to the head, Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said.
BUT LET’S HEAR WHAT THE SHERIFF said, ""This is the shining example" of why owning and knowing how to use a gun is important, the sheriff said.“She came out on the good on this end and the other guy, the bad guy, didn’t,” Clark said."
