Love those little concerned (and suspicious) faces lined up in the window! And for those who wondered yesterday where the Man’s arms were, it seems the Arms of Rescue have been found just in time!
Awww…kittens are so small! There’s actually a silver kitten hanging around my apartment I’m trying to rescue – I could pick her up and carry her off to the shelter now, but not (yet) her mother. If they’re keeping each other warm, I don’t want to leave one to be cold all alone, so for now, I bide my time, pet Silvercat when I can, and bribe her and Mama Calico with canned food on a daily basis. But I’m making progress!
Following yesterday’s discussion, some further thoughts on the pronunciation of “Cthulhu”.
1. I will assume that this is Lovecraft’s spelling of the sounds a human makes when trying to imitate the sounds that the Old Ones made. Lovecraft does not seem to have been a phonetician.
2. We do not know how the Old Ones made the sounds. It is probably better for our health and sanity if we never find out.
3. The intial “cth” combination does not present any great difficulty. The “c” is almost certainly represents an unvoiced velar plosive, and the “th” an unvoiced dental fricative, otherwise even Lovecraft would have chosen more imaginative spelling.
4. There is no vowel between the “c” and the “th”, so “kuthulhu” cannot be right.
5. The question is whether the consonants are to be pronounced sequentially or simultaneously. The puff of air released from the plosive provides the air stream for the fricative, but it is not clear whether onset of the “th” should start after or during the completion of the articulation of the “c”. The first option would make them two distinct consonants, the second would make them a combined consonant. Practice both over the weekend. There will be a test on Monday.
6. The “lh” combination presents greater diffculty. Is it supposed to be two distinct consonants, “l” and “h” as heard in “the bull who”? Is it an aspirated “l”? Is it a breathy-voice “l”? Or is it an unvoiced lateral fricative as found in Welsh (spelled “ll”) or an unvoiced alveolar approximant, as found in Burmese (romanised as “lh”)? Without Lovecraft’s help,I can see no way of deciding.
7. The vowels are a mystery. At best, we can say they are central to back, with some rounding. We do not even know whether it is the same vowel each time.
8. We have no indication of length, stress, or tonality.
9. So the problem seems insolvable. Lovecraft is not around to tell us, and neither are the Old Ones. And we do not want them back.
Freezing temps can’t touch my heart! I am remembering all our orbsters in mourning, fear, frustration, indecision, limbo, suspense, crisis, needing healing, a shoulder to cry on, feeling lost, seeking- something, angry, or someone to help celebrate a happiness!
Praise the Lord for His protection!Yesterday evening I got involved in a collision with an car.He came out of nowhere.Pedestrian vs automobile usually doesn’t end well for the former.Thankfully, I was able to walk away after the driver and a random passerby helped me up.Can you believe the driver actually wanted to get away before I politely asked if he would be as kind as to help me up?After that, I was able to resume my way home.Today I went to have myself checked up and I got away with at least one severely bruised rib and a lightly bruised left underarm.Praise the Lord with me, ‘cause this could’ve ended a LOT worse.I was sure I’d have used up one of my lives.
Thank goodness the little one isn’t afraid of him. Apparently it’s been socialized at some point. Now get the wee bitty kitty indoors to warm up. Time’s a wastin’!
Happy Caturday, orbsters, and orbabies. Sweet little kitty, trying so hard to be casual about the whole thing but, I’m sure, so grateful to be rescued.
There must be a poltergeist in my house, some invisible being keeps peeling onions. But I am SO glad the baby is found at last—get her warmed up and put some food in her tummy quick!
One wonders were the kitten came from. Was it the near by farm? Was she just dropped off by some mean and cruel unhumane human? Did she wander off from another house??
Orbsters, I need advice about a (possibly) stray cat in my parents’ neighborhood. The beautiful fluffy kitty has been coming around for a couple of months and begging for food. It comes even in the most bitter weather and clearly wants in. My parents have started feeding it, but their own kitties hate it. Do you think it has people and is just taking advantage, or should it go to a no-kill rescue?
Off Topic: My Robin, my first kitty in a LONG time, has a long tail and is a beautiful orange striped cat. She also has grown a very dense undercoat this winter and the result is a cat with a very soft pelt-like coat. The last cat that was like this was the So Soft Kitty. She was a small grey tabby with, by acclimation, the softest coat ever on a cat.I hope the new cat in the arc is like this.
Praying for those in need :) Would yall keep A friend in you thoughts and prayers? She recently lost her husband They were a sweet older couple- Thanks

SPOILER ZONE
I was up late so I figured I would start it today.

Three concerned and curious cats in the window. (Elvis has de-poofed enough to allow the others to see out the window).
Will the man survive in the void? How long will he survive? Will he go insane? Will he find something? Is that . . . a kitten? In the VOID?
Don’t just stand there! Do something!

I kinda wish we had a shot of Elvis’s reaction to the Man’s picking up the kitten. Probably poofed the other boys across the room.

Here’s an oldie but goodie: The Wayward Wind by Gogi Grant
The Wayward Wind is a stormy wind,
A stormy wind that brings a wonder,
A tiny cat, who could be kin
Who could be kin
To the Wayward Wind.
…….
On a snowy day came a tiny cat
Where she came from no one knows,
But she was out there, with a spirit rare
And her tiny paws, with so many toes.
…….
The Wayward Wind is a stormy wind,
A stormy wind that brings a wonder,
A tiny cat, who could be kin
Who could be kin
To the Wayward Wind.
…….
Though we all know that there should not be
Any spoilers to surprise,
I will tell you true of the joy she’ll bring
To all the Orb, and our favorite guys!
…….
The Wayward Wind is a stormy wind,
A stormy wind that brings a wonder,
A tiny cat, who could be kin
Who could be kin
To the Wayward Wind.
