I was watching a movie from the 1930’s recently. One of the female characters was wearing a mink stole. With two heads! Freaked me out more than a little bit. Amazing that people used to think that was fashionable.

They used to stuff couches with horse hair.

It’s fur as long as it’s attached to the skin.

Once it’s shed or cut it’s just hair.

Like the dog hair all over that couch.

One of my favorite “Peanuts” episodes was one where Charlie Brown was talking sports with Linus: “Remember how he used to throw the ol’ pigskin? Well, that was nothing compared to the way he used to swat the ol’ horsehide.” Snoopy thinks to himself: “I wish they’d just play their games and leave the animals out of it!”

No pet need die for their fur to be used. Shedded dog and cat hair can be turned into yarn which can be knitted. Some pet owners will collect their favorite pet’s hair for a few years then have that fur turned into a scarf or something to have a permanent memorial to their furry one.

Dog fur makes nice earmuffs.

So, wool is . . . hair? Fur?

I’ve always called dog hair “dog hair.” I’ve never called it fur.

Kate needs to update her sources, or use the internet more. Hair is fur and fur is hair, as is wool, whiskers and porcupine quills. Undifferentiated keratin called by different names down through history because no one could imagine they were all the same thing.
