This is the second time, by the way, that Stephan has used this particular line in a pun (although it’s been a few years since the first one, so nobody may remember it).

In the second panel, if the raised digit were slightly different, it would make a great lawn ornament for Rat.

He has 99 probe limbs and a beech ain’t one; he has a house on the shore and he can’t spell beach either.

Oddly, this was one that I understood on my own, having heard that line quoted before. You pick up little scraps of pop culture here and there. But it’s interesting that Pastis, who is in his fifties, apparently expected most of his readers to recognize it.
