Heart: Wow! That was awesome, Mom! Heart: did you see those little kid's faces light up when I brought out my old books? Mom: Yep, now your pop up and print books are going to dazzle another generation! Heart: Guess you can't do that with a kindle, eh? Mom: Not quite the same, no....

EXCELLENT point, Mark! As a paper engineer (designer of pop-up books) I’m often asked about the future of pop-up books on Kindle and iPad. Pop-up books just don’t translate well to the electronic format. Some things just need to be held in your hands to be appreciated. And while picture books and movable books CAN make the leap, there will always be something special about the printed page. A book is a timeless gift, evoking treasured memories. The Kindle and iPad are great for efficiently presenting the written word, but they will never be precious heirlooms. Hats off to Mark for this great reminder!

Is it even possible to donate your old kindle downloads? Or trade them for a discount at a used book store?

Yes, nicely done! And no, a kindle DOES NOT HOLD a candle to holding a book in your hand. I suppose the printed book will fall by the wayside just like so many other wonderful things have.

Judging from the lines waiting to check out books in my public library yesterday it’ll be a while. Every kid had 5-8 books, most adults had 2-4. (I had 2 for my grandson, 5 for me plus 2 DVDs and a CD. Imagine what my Kindle bill would have been)

Although I’ll probably get a Kindle (or iPad) someday I have to agree with Dry on the joy of holding a real book. Don’t have to worry about sunlight or batteries. And I can LOAN it to my parents or friends for as long as they need it. A Kindle download can be loaned for only 14 days.

I love my Kindle, so does my 11 year old daughter, my sister and my Mom. I have read it in the tub.. just was very careful. :) I also like that I can have it read to me. Audio books or text to speech. I love my hard back, and paper backs, and the baby books I used to read to my baby… they are hard to give up.. but space is always at a premium and my kindle really helps!
