I believe Need Coffee called this one near PERFECTLY yesterday.
He/She had two possible outcomes. The First one being that Tiffany would start flirting with Jack to the point that he misses Luann’s signals.
And from the looks of Tiffany’s outstretched arms, the Fuse it lit and the “flirting” is about to begin!
The question now is, will Luann be frantically signaling for help from a “distracted” Jack?
Or will things be perfect fine between Luann and Doug. But Jack, fearing he’s MISSED something important from Luann thanks to Tiffany, go tearing after Doug like a bull in a china shop?
Hilarity and possible bloodshed are about to ensue!
Unexpected complication. Was expecting Tiffany to zero in on Doug. Jack will need to find a way to move Tiffany – just order water PRONTO! Will take her a while to find the glass and figure out how the spigot works and fill it up before she returns.
I’m glad Paris showed up. What’s Luann’s point to go and date someone if she needs a protector? She set Gunthy up, now it’s time for her to taste her own stew! Besides, I kinda like Jack with Paris. We’ll see Doug on Friday, I’m sure.
This begs the question, but why didn’t Luann just tell Doug, "I’d love to meet you; I’ll be at the Fuse with friends, we can meet there " ? Public Place. Witnesses, Confirmed identities. Backup. everything needed for a first date.
This is like an upcoming trainwreck of a train carrying a thousand glorious fireworks. It’s going to be hugely destructive and not end well for anyone, but dang if it isn’t going to hard to look away!
Jack looks so unhappy to see Tiffany.., maybe is not just because she’ll disturb his important job for his special friend Luann, maybe he don’t like her? This makes me think, we know how their appointment went only from Tiffany’s point of view. Maybe it was a horrible experience for Jack?!
Luann, you are no longer in high school. You are a young adult, and you are meeting a guy from a dating app in a public place, and it’s even one that your parents own! Do you really need to bring a chaperone? I realize you’ve led a sheltered life, since you’ve known only about a dozen people all the time you were going through school and you have met only 3 more people in all the time that you’ve been going to community college, but isn’t it time to start meeting people without bringing a bodyguard?
Of course! I should have guessed. I must have missed Need coffee’s prediction from yesterday. It makes perfect sense. Put a “hunk” in the room with Tiff and it’s bees to honey time. :o)
I still don’t think that Jack is all that enamored of Tiffany. And her interest in him will probably just be a distraction to his wingman duties.
The Jack character is played rather ambiguously by Greg. Sometimes he resembles Superman; sometimes YFN Neanderthal. His comments today still express an interest in Luann. But is it boyfriend interest or big brother interest? Right now, he seems to be merely whatever Greg needs at the moment.
Once again, Luann is portrayed as a victim in dealing with the world outside her family and friends; or with children. Tara is seemingly portrayed as Luann’s agent provocateur. She played a hand in Luann being tossed out of the Monster Trucks venue, then straight into a raucous party from which she needed Jack’s rescue. Now Tara has induced Luann into accepting this blind date/meeting with “Doug the Unknown Quantity.”
Once again, Luann finds herself in a “situation” and looks for her favorite rescuer. Jack was left to worry about leaving Luann at “the party” and is again put in an uncomfortable position re “the date.” He needs to decide what his role is in this “friendship” and set some limits with which he’d be more comfortable.
A few changes in the art work, make the Fuse a malt shop, change Jack to Gunther and we’d be right back in Pitts High!
There seems to be no clear direction to the strip — except to let “hilarity ensue” as is oft said. :o)
MD called it, although I did survey some other commentors at least implicating Tiffany anyway. Hilarity ensuing. Now that Tiffany is inserted, and we have not seen Doug, we have two main characters, and a new recurring character, Jack, whose relationship with Luann is submerged in so many levels, what next? I have a lot of ideas but I am going to wait this out. It’s easy to figure that Luann will have things go not how she anticipated, but it could be a plus like Gunther’s, or disaster, while Tiffany is being Tiffany. So a wandering integer is Doug, and Jack. How will it all figure out?
You know what I’d like to see when this arc is over?
A scene where Gunther and Luann get together at some quiet little COFFEE shop. They’ll Compare notes on how their “dates” went. They’ll Share a laugh, and perhaps reminisce at all the fun, awkward times they’ve spent together since they’ve known each other. And then, they realize that their “Date Pic Date Adventure,” all started with that innocent night they spent in Gunther’s bedroom.
They’ll then stare for a very long time into each other’s eyes. And then suddenly, they kiss very passionately. Time, seems to stand still. And after their lips part, Gunther quietly pays the check. Not another word is spoken between the two for many months. The two will carry on with their lives, dating others.
And then, one crisp Fall morning, it slowly dawns on both of them.
I bet tiffany is going to sit with Jack and start talking, then her customers are going to start complaining and get in trouble for not doing her job, maybe even get fired and then Ann Eiffel will get on her case about paying off that $500 credit card bill.
1. At first glance, it looked like Tiffany was excited and interested to see Jack….. but…. her facial expression is not one of “joy” but is more nebulous. Also, her outstretched arms at first glance appeared to be in greeting…. but…. her whole body posture makes it seem like she is trying to block Jack’s view. BUT….
2. The obvious choice for her to block from Jack’s view is Luann… but at least to me, if that were the case, then Tiffany would be also using her “feminine wiles” (at least an inviting smile) to better capture Jack’s attention. So….
3. To me instead of the obvious, it appears more like Tiffany is just trying to hide Jack from someone or something else…. but what could that be?
* * * *
Other thoughts:
1. My take is that Tiffany is not embarassed to be seen by her friends working at The Fuse. For me, that is very good as I was a bit concerned that she might feel that way.
2. In panel 2 it seems just a little tiny bid rude for Luann to be showing Jack what appears to be the “hush hand” and I am glad that he completes his thought.
3. Luann’s facial expression in panel 2 shows her nervousness… but if that is the face she ends up showing Doug….. not a good choice, IMO. She needs to at least try to smile when she meets him…. even if she is nervous. She likely will smile…. but her initial lack of a smile is just an observation.
Some above have been questioning as to why Luann would need to have a bodyguard. The bodyguard may end up playing a larger part in the overall scheme of things. There have been some stories where the person falls in love with their bodyguard. Perhaps that is where this is headed.
Standard advise these days that is given to women who are meeting in person with someone they’ve only been in contact with before online is: (1) meet in a very public place (2) make sure people you trust know where you are going, and if you don’t contact them within a certain time period, they will look for you; (3) don’t order a drink and leave it on the table while you excuse yourself, because predators can drug you that way; (4) have a friend call you about half an hour after you are supposed to meet, and have some code words you can use if you want your friend to come get you for some kind of ‘emergency’ you have to leave for.
It does not matter how old the woman is who is meeting someone for the first time. These are not trusting times at all, and anyone who simply ventures blindly out with no back up may end up in the headlines as a ‘do you know who this dead woman is’…
Oh man! I can see this on GnK’s (i.e., Karen’s) storyboard now. We have two arcs crossing; Tiffany in a self-adsorbed way will get if front of Jack, thus screening LuAnne and her date; LuAnne’s date goes south, but Jack is now absorbed in Tiffany; Jack FINALLY becomes aware of what is happening and ‘jilts’ Tiffany – much to her dismay (and shock); Jack saves Luanne (oops, LuAnne) and ‘Oh, my hero’. Yes, a momentous moment in the Luanneaverse; one to which we will often refer back to in the future.
The “more abundant” Tiffany is just what Jack does not need now interposed between his eyes and the Doug-Luann Affair! But our Tiff’s impeccable timing will insure that all goes wretchedly, at least initially….

I think Jack just dropped two hints to Luann:

1. It feels weird to watch you date…

2. I won’t take my eyes off you.

The big lug may be figuring out what he might be losing.
