I’m so glad Puck doesn’t compete. I dislike it too. Competition requires winners and losers, and I prefer activities that allow for everyone to feel good at the end.
This American usage of “How about” is very confusing for the rest of us. We use it for suggestions and offers. “How about going for a walk” “How about a drink?” Here it seems to mean “What do you think about…”
I like the lines “Shall I tell the boy as far as he is able to respect his wives and love his concubines.” Words I would like to live by. (Technical difficulties prevent me.)
But the best bit has to be “And it puzzle me to learnThat tho’ a man may be in doubt of what he knowVery quickly he will fightHe’ll fight to prove that what he does not know is so”
I’m pretty sure Elvis would agree with a lot of the song.
I didn’t know there was a real life Sir Figaro Newton. Sad to hear that he has died. I hope the other cats understand that he is dead, and do not think that he has abandoned them.
Also, can anyone tell what that is next to Puck in the last panel – on his right, under his paw? It sort of looks like another lens for the binoculars…
Here’s a photo of my cat Mithril leaping up a curtain, he certainly could go high. Sadly he was kicked by burglars and died shortly after this photo from 2002. https://1drv.ms/u/s!AoM4qvSxLm8YhfBntGjO2PY-JimQ3g
Sir Figaro Newton’s passing reminds all of us of the transient amount of time we have with our furry friends. It is never enough. This week has been a real hotchpotch of emotions. We have a new friend who is living with us now. Belle, a jet-black, 6-month old, female kitten came home with us last weekend from the Shelter. She is shy, but coming around in a house with established cats. But Sir Figaro’s passing has brought the recent loss of McKayla back into my mind with full force.
As it has been said; we need more ‘hellos’ in our life and fewer ‘goodbyes’. So, hello Belle welcome to our family, and, adios Sir Figaro.
For those who missed it yesterday and are piecing together the info about Sir Fig, here is what Georgia posted on Facebook. I shared it here late yesterday. "I have some very sad news to share… The real life Sir Figaro Newton passed away today, after battling an illness. He was only ten years old, his Woman and Man—Emily and Joseph—did not expect to lose him so soon in life. I was fortunate enough to meet the real life Sir Figaro through the door, during cat sitting, or just dropping by to say hello when we all lived in the real Big Pink House. He was a warm, sweet boy. A constant companion to Emily, and loved his Man Joseph so dearly. When faced with an over excited Toddler who was so delighted to see his first “mow mow” beside Elvis, Lupin, and Puck, Sir Figaro looked our beaming, laughing, LOUD tiny son up and down and casually, kindly gave him a friendly little head bump. He truly was the sweetest.I know readers will ask, so I will remind everyone that none of the cats will ever pass away in the comic. They will live on here for you and all of us real life owners, as it is hard enough to lose them in real life. In BCN they will always be healthy and happy and together. The real life Beatrix and Baba Mouse are no longer with us, and we all love them just as dearly. I hope maybe somewhere somehow today Figaro is being greeted by an enthusiastic Beatrix, eager to make friends and show him around. (Maybe Baba will introduce herself after Beatrix’ fanfare )My heart breaks for Emily and Joseph, ten feels too young and so unfair. If you send them some love here, they will be able to see it. I am so grateful that they gave me their blessing years ago now to introduce Sir Figaro and Tabitha into the BCN world, and to all of you. So much love to Emily and Joseph, and their other fur babies Tabitha and Nimbus, today.Sir Figaro was not just a good boy—he was a great boy.
RIP Sir Figaro! You will be sorely missed by your humans. His passing is especially poignant for me right now. I’ve just found out that my William (pictured to the left) — think Puck as a Russian Blue — has, at best IBD, and at worst lymphoma. Don’t have the resources for a biopsy. So, I’ll try to be more Zen, and treasure every moment with Bill. That’s all any of us has anyway, even as we imagine our tomorrows.
Off topic: I want to thank everyone who liked or replyed or liked a reply to me yesterday. I do feel better from the outpouring of response. I often feel like I don’t really belong in such a kind and supportive group, and I am grateful that this orb exists and that I didn’t have to pass some test to belong here.
I figure some people might not know about the great feature on the old site for looking up strips by character. This link brings you to the 22 original strips that featured Sir Figaro Newton. Unfortunately there isn’t an easy way to find all the new newspaper strips he has been featured in so far.
Sir Figaro Newton you will live on forever in our hearts an in BCN. RIP.
I think in this comic, I rarely know what is going on and who is who. I think there’s a guide for it somewhere on the site. I didn’t know I was so dumb.
My heart goes out to the guardians of Sir Figaro Newton. Our family had to say goodbye last Wednesday to a dear 15 year old doggie named Andrea. No matter the age, it always seems too soon to lose our dear animal companions.
Maybe Puck will be like the ‘color commentator’, like Terry Bradshaw, or Dick Vitale, or in this case, Larry King!! [Although, Elvis is the one who wears the suspenders!!] ;)
To end the day on a happy note, Pucky is well again! Georgia posted on facebook: “I’m very happy to report that Puck is pretty much 100% back to his regular little self! He stopped having tummy troubles a couple of days ago and his energy came back in full force yesterday. I even had to shoo him away from some People-lunch he was trying to pocket. He’s back to hopping up onto windowsills”

And for those who missed it, a few days ago Shaunnmunn made a reference to “Siamese” and “puzzlement”. It’s this great song from “The King and I”

From Seals and Crofts: We May Never Pass This Way Again
Life, so they say, is but a vapor that we let slip away,
Love, like the Autumn sun, should be fleeting but it’s only just begun.
…….
Like the Rainbow Bridge we see just ahead,
We must prepare to say farewell,
But our furry friends in the Universe,
Whisper in our ears and as the years come and go take us up, always up!
…….
We may never pass this way again!
We may never pass this way again!
We may never pass this way again!
…….
Dreams, so they say, are just for fools and we let them drift away.
Joy, like a sigh of love,
Should go silent, but it’s only just begun,
…….
Knowing when we lose a furry friend,
We must gather all our courage,
Seek the love of all our friends in the Orb
Cast away our fears and all the love we have to give
Will take us up, always up!!
…….
We may never pass this way again!
We may never pass this way again!
We may never pass this way again!
…….
So, I want to laugh with all my friends here now
I wanna cry for the grief when it comes
Our friends may never pass this way again,
But still they’re all here, it’s true.
Sometimes we lose our human and fur friends,
But there’s a journey, and we’ll see them again,
We may never pass this way again, but down the road they’re right there.
……..
We may never pass this way again!
We may never pass this way again!
We may never pass this way again!
