I love the rephrase from “can’t have chocolate” to “don’t partake in”. There’s definitely a different feeling to “partake”, which I think leads better into Beatrix’ assumption of “a dog religion thing”. An excellent touch!
Beatrix is so aware of border issues, far more than most humans much older than she who think they have a right to be nosy! You are so considerate, Bea! Way to make our new doggie friend feel comfortable!
Now that a related strip has come up, I’d like to leave a warning here: TEA, CHOCOLATE, AND CAFFEINE ARE ALL POISONOUS TO DOGS AND CATS.
Theobromine (which is found in several plants, including cocoa beans and tea leaves) is the chemical responsible for chocolate’s deadliness. Although it isn’t quite as bad as caffeine (which is toxic), it’s still very dangerous for animals to consume.
The reason chocolate poisoning is associated with dogs, despite theobromine affecting cats more strongly, is that cats have no sweetness receptors; to them, even if chocolate doesn’t taste bad, it certainly doesn’t taste good enough to keep eating.
I remodeled a kitchen for a Jewish couple from Washington University many, many years ago. At the end of the job, they invited me to have a cocktail with them (great Martini by the way). Anyway, during our cocktail they told me about some outstanding artisanal sausage from a local company. I asked the couple if they kept kosher and both said not at all. Neither person was taken aback by my inquiry.
A politely asked, topical question should not elicit embarrassment, either by the inquisitive person or on the respondent’s part. It is how we learn and can end up relating to people.
Now I have the Song “Getting To Know You” From The King And I, in my head for the rest of the day. :-)
A cousin had a black lab who got under the christmas tree and ate a rather large bag of mixed Lindt truffles, wrappings and all. The vet said to watch her and well, the snow was rather colorfully glittered from the wrappings for several days but she was ok.
You could get carob powder and make him a cup of “doggie cocoa”. It’s similar enough to chocolate. It was good enough for me when I was a kid and my mom had forbidden junk food.
I have been away from the comics the last few days and I am not really back now. We lost our beloved Gracie (Norfolk Terrier) to cancer Tuesday. Our hearts are broken.
I now understand why older people seemed so stuck in the past when I was a child.
Because, honest and true, when I was growing up I was told repeatedly and by a large and diverse set of adults, “If you don’t ask, you won’t learn.” Willful ignorance is BAD. Refusing to ask in a polite and respectful way results in WILLFUL IGNORANCE.
If we want people to get along, we have to be willing to share that which makes us different.
And additional hugs, boops, purrs, and snuggles to our beloved SheMc. You are in our thoughts and prayers. I’ve sent word across the Rainbow Bridge so Fluffy, Sabrina, Spot, and Smokey will be there to give Jan all their purrs.
As much as I love all the characters, Beatrix is my favorite. She should star in her own comic strip. I can’t get enough of her.
As for questions, I have a last name that is pronounced exactly as it is spelled, but people insist on mangling it. They then inevitably ask me what nationality I am. I don’t know why, but that irritates me. I have to remind myself that they are not intentionally being rude and I should not be rude, either. Again, I have no idea why it bothers me. It’s silly.
I was in a sold-out stadium one time when the announcer said my name and that I had just won a prize (autographed jersey) and the TV camera zoomed in on me jumping up and yelling “he pronounced my name right!” over and over.
I’m back home from the dental surgeon’s office with one tooth less than I had when I left home! It did not come out easily. There was a lot of tugging and drilling and cracking sounds involved, and apparently I have stitches. I’m not looking forward to the moment when the numbing stuff wears off.
Thank you all for the healing thoughts and purrs. My little guy sailed through the surgery and woke up (and was such a diva) the vet sent him home with me early. The power of purrs and prayers and thoughts is so real.
I typed this earlier, but then my vet called and I guess I didn’t finish.
OT: Nushi – Thank you for all your purrs, boops, healing energy and prayers. We are waiting on test results, but found out when the vet was mounting one of the slides that there is something wrong with Nushi’s blood. It is suspected that she has Feline Immune-mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA), most likely secondary IMHA, which is not a good sign. Her ataxia is worse today, but so far she is still eating well.
Still hoping it’s something else and doing research. FIP is truly a horrible disease, and the more I know about it I feel even more sympathy and pain that this is what Georgia went through with Beatrix. The good news is that there is new research that indicates a cure for this currently incurable disease. Unfortunately it won’t be commercially available for 1-2 years, even if all goes well…

I was wondering when the chocolate (not for dogs especially) issue would get addressed. Be safe Trevor. Nice sensitivity Beatrix.

Are these being shown out of order? It seems to me the last time Beatrix was outside, she already knew the dog drank tea.
