Man, that’s an ancient meme. Does anybody at all still care? I admit that to me “fashion” is mainly silly except where it’s worse.

Who makes up these rules and why do people follow them?

My polyester leisure suit with the bell-bottomed pants is still in good shape and so am I. I still fit in it.

Every time I see something about wearing white after Labor Day I think of Serial Mom. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0111127/ the funniest movie Kathleen Turner ever made (Undercover Blues was second), with Sam Waterson before he became Jack McCoy on Law & Order as her hapless, helpless, husband.

Fashion designers call the shots on fashion rules. However, I don’t wear my white shoes after Labor Day…it’s ingrained in me and would feel conspicuous if I did…lol

One of the wonderful things about retirement is that I no longer have to conform to dress codes—either those imposed by the company or by fashion. Whoever decided that a woman has to wear heels in order to run a company? Why do women have to pack multiple suits and blouses for a business trip when men just need to pack several shirts? Ah! The joy of t shirts and jeans. I’m retired and therefore almost invisible so no one cares what I look like from behind.

The rule actually is No White SHOES after Labor Day. It dates back to era before white tennis shoes, which, even in the late 1950s, were a year-round staple. This rule is obsolete, but it survives as a joke.

“How the Rule Got StartedIn the early 1900s, the rule about only wearing white between Memorial Day and Labor Day was started according to the vacationing schedule of the elite, when there “was a dress code for practically every occasion.” Those who could afford it would leave their homes behind and spend months at the sea or in the mountains, where they had a completely different type of wardrobe, including the light, bright white pieces most associated with the summer months. When those fun-loving summer days were over, the white clothes were packed away and the people went back to their regular lives, having escaped the oppressive heat between the end of May and early September. Those white clothes that they loved during the summer months had no place in their “real life” wardrobes, so the cutoff for white clothing became Labor Day.”

One of the joys of being retired and living in a warm climate that has very little temperature fluctuation … there are no fashion rules!!

It’s shorts, tank tops or tee-shirts and flip-flops for most of the year. If the weather does get a bit cool, then jeans, golf shirts, and sneakers are the uniform of the day.

Comfort over style …No ties for the guys!! White’s right – day or night!

Stupid rules like that are just begging to be broken; why the bloody hell should it matter what color you wear when? Especially considering how people dress now anyway (pants hanging off, pajamas in public, etc, etc).

This rule must have been made up by the Cape Cod uppercrust back when there weren’t many states to the west. It’s ridiculous. In Oklahoma “summer” lasts through most of October. I guarantee you they would be wearing white down here.
