Oh, those dejected Goldie ears in Panel 3… They hit me right in the heart. If it weren’t for the last panel, this strip would be too heartbreaking to reread!
OK… calling it now: Goldie’s people looked and looked for her when they were leaving, but they had a flight to catch, so they had to leave without her. They feel just as terrible as she does, and as soon as possible, they’ll be back to look for her again.
Well said, Bea. Managed to say what we’re all thinking without resorting to the language we’d like to use and would wonder where you’d picked it up at your age.
I’d love to know how the…longer term residents of the Big Pink House are going to take this news. It reflects even worse on the people Goldie used to live with that they live SO CLOSE to a cat rescue and couldn’t even be bothered to take her there.
Tillie: “…So you can let Goldie know we tracked down those people and horked some hairballs in their shoes.”
Puck: “Not that they don’t deserve it, but would they even notice? We can’t touch each other and all.”
Tillie: “One of those weird things, I guess. The people we’ve done it to certainly ACT like they’ve just found unexpected hairballs.”
With all due respect to the commenters here, even if Goldie’s people weren’t great, I’d still rather not call them mean terms. I can’t help but feel bad for them, regardless of what they may have decided to do.
Maybe they believed that “setting her free” was a better option than “imprisoning” her at a rescue shelter – it may be an uneducated opinion, but if it were the case, it would still mean good intentions.
Regardless, I don’t like the slinging around of mean-spirited names, even if they seem fitting for the person(s) they’re aimed toward.
I predict world wide reporting of inferior screens. Thank you Bea, for providing the angry eyes. You use kinder words than many of us would. Tommy, is your tummy available for rubs later? I need some comfort too once you know Goldie is ok.
I still think that Goldie wasn’t there at the time of the move. The other neighbor said she’s been getting a lot of calls about her. This is the stuff of Shakespearean tragedy— think “Romeo and Juliet.”
Goldie’s poor, sad ears…And as for Beatrix in the last panel, well, “out of the mouths of babes” (I forget the next few words); kittens and children can be brutally honest.
To help understand the possible attitude of Goldie’s people (besides the fact they are unfeeling jerks) is to remember the Fifties. We had a cat who provided two litters of kittens which we enjoyed and then did the Free To a Good Home outside a supermarket. As a child, I never thought about it because it was the norm. Spay and neuter were not even part of the vocabulary.
There’s an old movie that says it all for the attitude. Panic in the Year Zero – really stupid movie. Family out for a drive with the dog sees the mushroom clouds over the city and realizes WWIII had happened. First thing the father does is stop the car and push the family dog out. He tells his family “It’s us or the dog.” And he’s the good guy, the hero of the movie. Ironically, they soon run into bad guys where having a large, protective dog would be helpful. The movie never comments on that fact. It simply makes it clear that a pet is like a stuffed toy. To be enjoyed when things go well but gotten rid of if necessary. At least, remembering that is a reminder that we as a society have really made progress in regards to animals but also there are still those with that older mindset
I just want to point out that maybe her owners didn’t take her with was because they couldn’t, e.g. the new place didn’t allow pets or something. Not saying just leaving the cat outside and abandoning it was the right choice in that sort of situation (it’s definitely not), but they may not have known there were better solutions available to them for such situations—I’ve encountered pet owners that were like that who were otherwise perfectly well-intentioned…just not properly educated on their options.
Basically, I want more evidence on just what happened before ruling whether they were garbage exactly or not.
Some years ago, for one abysmal summer in between college semesters, I was in the need for money badly and had to work for the local county (meaning municipal type) animal shelter, selling – yes – dog licenses door-to-door. While my work partner and I had to wear a shirt and a (plastic) badge, we had no real authority, although the licensing of dogs was required by local ordinance.
I saw how humanity can really be in up-close, in-your-face action. Some folks were really nice and glad to pay for a license ($8 per animal per year was all), while others begrudgingly did with more than some grumbling at times. … A few were near violent, refusing to pay or denying they had a dog. We had to call the police on one individual.
But the worst of it, and with slight fortune that it was a rare occurrence, was that we would witness animals that were being neglected or abused. Rail-thin starving, ate up with mange, I saw it. We would report back to the office, and only in the extreme cases, the dog warden or his staff would respond. But all the reports, and there were many, we filed about folks who refused to pay, were belligerent, etc., were thrown in the trash by the dog warden himself, saying, “We just don’t have the time!” …
It was a revenue-generator for the county, and that’s ALL it was! I left it most disgusted… :(
The only bad thing about this arc is knowing in advance that it would end well. I miss most of the “blurry screen syndrome” that people report. Today, however, was a little different. Screen didn’t get blurry, but I have a warm feeling inside. Looking forward to seeing Goldie’s interactions with the boys. I wish I could meet them all, personally.
However, my fellows will do. (((8^D))) (Very happy!)
Several years ago, in the process of moving from Texas to Arizona, I had to leave behind 4 of my 5 cats. I left them in the excellent care of my mother, who took care of them along with her 3 cats, but my boys didn’t realize that I hadn’t abandoned them.
Seeing Goldie’s face in panel 3 just makes my heart ache. I know the 16 months my boys and I were apart was hard on all of us, but I bet my boys wore Goldie’s face often during that time. Even though Gramamma took such good care of them, it’s not the same as having momma and poppa there.
Like Goldie’s story, this one has a happy ending too – a year ago, our house was completed, and we were reunited, and I’m never going to be parted from my crew for so long again, not for anything. My mom lives with us too, so they didn’t lose their connection with Gramamma, who visits them every day, but now they have momma and poppa AND gramamma, which is just about as good as it gets.
But seeing Goldie’s little face makes me think of how hard it must have been on them. The only one who liked the time apart was Barnaby, who got to be the only-est kitty with momma and poppa for those 16 months. He was NOT pleased to be reunited with his adopted brothers, and even a year later, they’re not too pleased with him (since he wasn’t forced to ensure the separation as they were).
But this whole arc makes me feel….not guilty. But sorry that circumstances were such that my boys probably thought I’d abandoned them. 16 months is a long time, and I did leave them behind on purpose, albeit in good hands. I’d have taken them with me if I could have, but….I couldn’t. So I took my eldest, Barnaby, and left the others in my mom’s capable care. Leaving them behind was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. But thankfully it’s behind us now, we’re all together again, and I am grateful for every moment I get to share with my crew.
About seven years ago a woman who was my supervisor’s wife told a story at a dinner party that when she and her husband moved the last time she placed their old cat with friends in another town. The cat ran off. The woman had to return a few weeks later to her previous house to get something and the cat was there, hungry and waiting. She got what she was after and drove off and left the cat a second time. I still get so mad thinking about this I can hardly talk. I never spoke to her again after that. I don’t think she noticed at all. Garbage is right.
No Beatrix, they weren’t garbage. Garbage is WAAAAAYYYYYY too nice a term for the kind of scum they were to leave poor Goldie like that. But you have the right line of thought there.
The third frame is literally heartbreaking. But I am glad to see her smile in the last. When my beloved Caramel went missing, I was devastated. I literally wound up in need of serious help. And after two weeks, she was found, and because she was chipped, returned to me. I would never abandon her.
Ooh, Beatrix’s inner tiger coming out hard! You tell her kid! Love it! These strips are kicking me right in the feels with steel-toe boots! I am SOOOOO looking forward to seeing Goldie get taken into her new loving furever home!
And also on Facebook, Georgia is having another originals sale, Nov 25, 12 noon Pacific time, on Etsy. Details coming. Last year I was so excited to actually score a 5×7; more exciting than even the last few seconds of a hotly contested eBay auction. I could not believe how fast everything was snapped up. This year we had so much unexpected home repair work that I can’t possibly even try but it will be fun to drop into her fb to see what will be on offer. Good Luck to everyone does who try to score one!
Goldie’s expression in panel three is just heartbreaking. But isn’t Bea just the most wonderful darling being so vehement in panel four – and it even gets a kind of half-wry smile from Goldie. Like to hug them both.
Something’s been nagging at me to ‘fess up to the Orb. See I haven’t got a cat – haven’t had one since Fluffy many years ago. Her story – Fluffy was one of a number of cats that a lady had. But the lady developed a disease – think cancer – and had to give away all her cats or take them to the local shelter – they weren’t a no kill shelter either. So I went with a friend, not thinking of really adopting, but after seeing the lady and hearing her story, I decided to try to adopt Fluffy – a older kitty, long-haired, grey and white with green eyes. She was ok. First night she got into the unused fireplace in my apartment and got pretty “ashy.” Had to give Fluffy a bath. Over the next few weeks, I’d care for her and pet her and bought a few toys. But I didn’t feel that I was really bonding with Fluffy. Not sure Fluffy was either to be honest. So I decided I couldn’t keep her – but I DIDN’T take her to the shelter. Put an advert in the local newspaper – free kitty to a good home. Got several phone calls – most I didn’t quite care for really. But then an older lady called. She and her daughter had recently lost their cat and was interested. I invited them over after talking with them on the phone. Well turns out they liked Fluffy a lot and wanted her. I was glad and relieved – and sad and feeling guilty. They asked why I wanted to give Fluffy away and well instead of saying we weren’t bonding, I said I didn’t have time for Fluffy and was thinking of going back to college (which I was and did). So ended up they took Fluffy. Heard from the mother several weeks later and they said that Fluffy had adapted and was really happy in her new home and they loved her. Sure was glad to hear that – but kind of still felt rather guilty (more)
Probably nobody reads that anymore after hundreds of comments…But I have 2 stories…1) The humans of Precious (mom) and Zena (daughter) were evicted (couldn’t/didn’t pay their rent) – they asked us to keep them in our backyard, they’d be back to pick them up… never happened… (I don’t know why, don’t want to judge)2) After having a stray cat for a month around a house, feeding her once in a while, posting her photo on 3 or 4 FB local “lost/found” groups, I let her in, she came in and ate, used litter box as if this is natural: clearly NOT a feral… brought her to the vet (who estimated her around 1y old), she had not been fixed, we fixed her… now, she thinks this is her home… 3) 2 dogs had been around the period that Gracie (the cat of #2) was around, wonderful rescuers took care of these wonderful dogs.. adn the rumour was, that these dogs came from a house which was raided and all humans jailed… I do not know if this is true, and maybe, Gracie came from the same house? I would like she told me her story=> “Goldies” are numerous…
I hate people who do things like that. We always moved our cats and dogs with us, from Rhode Island to Maine to Maryland to Florida and then to Michigan (I grew up in a Coast Guard family), and then from Spain to Maryland then California then back to Spain and then to Maryland (married into the Navy). Abandoning our pets was never even considered as an option, any more than abandoning a human child would be.

As Katy Perry says, You are a Firework
Do you ever feel
Like a long-lost stray
Wandering through the town
Like you’ve lost your way?
Do you ever feel lost and so alone?
Not sure where to turn,
And no place to call home?
Do you know there are
Those who do love you?
They’re looking out for you!
You just have look around
And you will find,
Those who love you so
Human and feline!
Goldie, you’re a firework,
Your friends all know how much you’re worth!
You’ll make us all go Ah! Ah! Ah!
As you shine just like a shooting star!
Goldie, you’re a firework,
Your friends all know how much you’re worth!
You don’t have to go, you know,
Cause your friends, they all love you so!
Mew, mew, mew!
Your cat friends all love you too-ooh-ooh
Their love is coming through-ooh-ooh
And your dreams are coming true-ooh-ooh!
Goldie, you’re a firework,
Your friends all know how much you’re worth!
You don’t have to go, you know,
Cause your friends, they all love you so!
Mew, mew, mew!
