Ok I’ll bite. What does buffery mean in this context? It does not appear to be a real word. The only definition I found for buffery is in the urban dictionary and I’m pretty sure that not what the author was going for.
Oh, wow. Think about it. Sledding and streaming movies have something in common: crowd-centric critical mass. You get on a good sledding hill, and the last thing you want is to have it all to yourself. Because the more people use it with you, the more the snow gets packed down and the faster you can go. Also, there’s a better chance you’ll get to see someone wreck extraordinarily and that it won’t be you. But as soon as too many people use the same sledding hill, you burn through all that glorious slicked-down snow to the mud and the grass, and now nobody’s sled goes fast at all.
See? Broadband is like that. The more people who use it, the better network the telecom company sees fit to invest in. But once the demand starts to outpace the supply, you’re bogged down as effectively as you are trying to sled down a sandbar that’s seeing more friction than new snow.
Although when the sledding hill turns to mush, it’s because people are outdoors sledding, not sitting motionless in a dim room addicted to video games. Or watching Epic Fail videos of other people, albeit not very bright people, who are at least out there doing something.
That’s probably not why the broadband is slow, either, but sometimes you just want to get a good mad on, and it might as well be directed at strangers. Or even people who don’t, one way or another, exist.
I went to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on Friday. Cool characters and impressive special effects, but the movie was LONG. Fun, though, since I’m a big fan of the series.

Logging on to two cans and a string never took any time, either.

The modern equivalent of not going to the movie theater because it’ll be too crowded and rowdy tonight.

Buffery is the pill you take two of when all the random pauses in your streaming give you a headache.

Speaking of a “huge movie night” …
