If you can’t laugh at this comic you have absolutely no sense of humor…..or you are too wound up in your religion. Anyway, Dan is already on a fast track to hell for drawing this, I’m right behind him for laughing at it, and I doubt there is any escape for the rest of you!:-)
A sense of humor is a gift from God. I suggest people read the book “God is Disappointed With You” by Mark Russell for a refreshing perspective on the bible, both testaments.
I don’t mean to be a wet blanket, but the Iranian astrologers didn’t show up in the stables in Bethlehem. Scriptures say they were guided by a star (nice trick, that) to “Mary’s house” in Bethlehem, implying that the holy family lived there. On the evidence of the text, that would have been about two years after the actual birth, though the “slaughter of the innocents” is hardly historical (it’s unmentioned in Josephus, who has a lot to say about the horrors perpetrated by Herod and his family, or in any other historical account). Besides, Judea was effectively a police state, and the king would have known all about where the astrologers went and whom they met with. Anyway, the return of the holy family from Egypt to Nazareth, rather than Bethlehem, was because Galilee was beyond the realm of Herod Archelaus.
It’s kind of funny. Luke has to use the unwieldy and implausible story of an imaginary Roman census to get the holy family from Nazareth to Bethlehem; Matthew has to use an unwieldy and implausible visit of astrologers to get the holy family from Bethlehem to Nazareth.
I think it’s thought-provoking and could generate a lot of interesting conversation and speculation. But if I’m supposed to laugh at it, well, I just don’t find it funny.

Same premise as James Morrow’s 1990 fantasy novel, “Only Begotten Daughter” (which he later expanded into a trilogy).
