There’s still some good original programming - “Castle”, “The Closer”, “Warehouse 13”, “Eureka”, “”Bones” - but nothing I’d let a kid that age watch. Even the stuff on the Cartoon Channel and Disney aren’t suitable for a 7 year old.
I feel his pain, though tonight I’ve got three shows I want to watch that are airing that the same time–with DVR, I can only tackle two. Oh, what to do?! ;)
Catlady - you said TWO great shows … Warehouse 13 and Eureka. I’ve also gotten hooked recently on SG1 and SGA.
I also like Family Feud and Most HGTV/TLC/Discovery shows.
Shoot, we dumped our cable service over two years ago and have not missed it for one second. More time for better things like reading or actually interacting with real people.
I can remember as a kid (way back in the dark ages) listening to some of the radio soaps when I was home sick. This would have been in the very late 1950s or early 1960s. And yes, they still had a few radio dramas on at that time.
I remember being disappointed by what was on TV when I was sick as a kid. I thought it must be something amazing, but ended up being bored by Sesame Street, game shows and soap operas. I ended up reading or just playing by myself with all the toys my sister never let me play with.
My rule is if you are sick you are in bed. No TV, but books and toys are OK. If you are laid up for another reason (surgery, broken bone) TV might be allowed.
When my son was about 8 and was bed ridden for several weeks and he recovered just fine with no TV. He had visiting buddies that would play with him.
When he was about 14 and again bedridden for several weeks I did get cable TV for him but he was not used to it and grew bored with it.
Watching soap operas isn’t all bad. The stories themselves are incredibly stupid, but there are some great babes to watch. Unfortunately, two of the best for that, “Guiding Light” and “Another World” are gone.
With 200 + channels, my Tivo finds plenty of good suggestions as well as all the “season Pass” things. I watch very few network shows but enjoy Criminal Minds and the Mentalist- the rest of mine are mostly Food Channel and Bravo.

Ladyfingers - I love the line in Princess Bride when the grandfather says to the sick kid, “In my day TV was called BOOKS!” AMEN!!

There are some good shows on now, but most of them aren’t suitable for kids.
