Spouse and I use to buy french fries. We would park near the football field. We then would carefully throw the fries out the window towards the hood of the truck. The seagulls would go ravaging mad for those silly food sticks! We were happy we had the protection of all that metal and glass! The birds were always disappointed when we would run out of their treat!

Near where I work, there is a field frequented by flocks of both crows and seagulls. Watching their interactions is interesting. I don’t mess with either.

Hmm … the only time I felt sorry for a seagull was in a scene from the Jules Verne classic “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (won’t get graphic, but I’m sure some of you will remember the scene).

Reminds me of family vacation in 2004, when we were in Corpus Christi, TX, and my then-10-year-old sister got chased all over the beach by seagulls after sharing the heel of a loaf of bread with one of them!

One of the best Sunday strips from Garfield in quite a while!

We also had seagulls nearly everywhere in the UK and on the seaside, they always went for chips both the tourists and locals carried and pick them off.

I remember one news report about how to stop the gulls picking the food out. As a experiment for a local college, a man starting at the gull while he carried the bag of chips while walking and the gull flew away without picking it up. A group of families putting a bag of chips on the ground and sat a few metres from the chips and watched it, It did not work when lots of gulls went over it and grabbed them all. It actually works while you walk with holding a bag of chips or any food and stare at the gull flying over you.

I used to volunteer at the local Wednesday evening farmers market. There were also food trucks and tents with ready to eat foods. Set-up began at 1pm. Either the gulls knew it what day it was, or they recognized the trucks. The gulls would start patrolling the street as soon as a few vendors arrived, and stay until we were done cleaning up, after dark.

A while ago, in the old harbor of Marseille, France, I saw something scary: a seagull dove on an adult pigeon, grabbed it and took it away on the water. Everybody stayed open-mouthed. Shades of Hitchcock

many years ago in windsor in the UK my wife and i bought a bag of bread to feed ducks along the thames river. the problem was the birds started to swarm. We fought a retreat as i would throw bread behind the birds. so they’d turn around and fight each other. the scary part was the swan who started tracvking my hand to the bread bag and out. he was working it out.
