I think this is the first time I’ve seen Janis with a realistic body for a woman who has to be in her 50s.

She looks quite slim walking down the street in shorts…

and smaller in the last panel than in the first three.

It might be that when she’s alone, looking in the mirror, we’re seeing what she sees, rather than reality.

 

Not that she’s “fat” in either case…

but I think her inner vision adds 30 or 40 pounds to what anyone else can discern.

Janis, believe me, if you could read Arlo’s mind right now, you’d slap his face!

Whenever this conversation comes up I tell my better half I like a healthy woman. That being said I think Susan nailed it.

All of a sudden Blondie is starting to look pretty good.

JJ has intentionally exaggerated Janis’ proportions in the first three panels to convey what SHE sees (or more correctly, thinks she sees) when she looks in the mirror. Notice she is back to normal/yesterday in the last panel.

How is it she expands and contracts depending on the punch line? She’s always drawn thin unless it’s some gag like this. I’m glad real people don’t do that.

Men and women with abundant flesh were considered properous during the late 1800s/first part of the 20th century. Body images change.

There have been quite a few strips involving Janis in her underwear, in a bikini, etc. in the past few weeks. I count 7 in the past month.

Ugh. My eyes are burning – I will never be able to unsee that….

She’s gonna have to get a lot bigger to get him on a low-fat diet.
