Sad to see the right to vote becoming a privilege controlled by power-seeking politicians that have absolutely no love of a constitutional democratic republic!!!
Make attendance at a polling place compulsory for all citizens. To comply with the law the state will then have to provide easy registration, suitable locations, open on suitable days for a suitable length of time. For those unable to attend, easy access to pre-poll voting and/or postal voting. Employers would have to allow time off for voting or be in breach of the law. Then for all representative positions implement preferential (instant run off) voting. Change in the behaviour of government will follow.
In Washington we have voted by mail for, I think, seven years. In this largely Democratic state we elected a Republican Secretary of State to run the election process, and she has done a great job.
Why is Presidential election day not a national holiday, it is bipartisan, only once every four years and more time to vote, what am I missing on this no braiier? I have even write my congressman about this and Pelosi too. Hmmm?
Last local election they moved the polling place and didn’t put up sign telling you how to get to the new one. You had to fill out your ballot in your car, then hand it to a clerk who took it inside. All the time the candidates were on the other side of your car waving signs and yelling who to vote for (talk about intimidation)
I really don‘t get the american problems. In my country we vote on a sunday in public schools or other public buildings (or by mail if it is better for you). They are almost everywhere and cost nothing extra to rent for this day.Where do you vote? Special voting-places?
Huh. I was hoping Trudeau might use the Marc Thiessen “interview” (a couple of days ago in the WaPo) with dt spouting off about how all the hatred was coming from the lefties. The material was right there. . . Of course, this is relevant, too. BTW, was pleased to see that a FL judge threw out the condition that reps had tried to tack on to the vote a couple of years ago where we restored voting rights to those who had served their time.
The county where I reside has sent paper applications for a ballot to registered voters. A return envelope was included. The county provided a website address for online registration. Registering was very simple. By voting by mail, I can now avoid exposure to Covid-19 at a polling place and help prevent four more years of exposure to Trump.
I notice the “Electoral College” doesn’t seem to have problems getting to the voters booth. Do you know who your electoral college voter is? Your vote is counted but doesn’t elect the president. The electoral vote matters. Who is voting for you?
In Virginia, Governor Ralph Northam signed a bill making Election Day a state holiday. If (when?) Biden is elected in November (and we flip the Senate from red to blue), I would be thrilled to see the voting rights act get reinstated. Not to mention, making Election day a federal holiday and getting rid of the electoral college, not necessarily in that order.
It is the power of the $$. This means using the power of property taxes being withheld just like a rent strike. If people did not pay their taxes for one, two or three years then how long would this manipulative unethical crooked behavior last. Public services start to fold with layoffs, no schooling for as long as it takes, and parasitic “public servants” lose jobs.
The how to do it? As part of the better voting situation the powers that be would have to declare If there will be no penalties or interest charged for missing the deadline. A billionaire in the state would have to finance the advertising and promoting the movement, be involved in negotiating the changes necessary, providing the model legislation for continuity and back the politicians and candidates who are on board.
Otherwise people will have to get used to being disenfranchised. It takes a movement to get the sociopaths who are resisting and fighting to move.
BTW, I am in Michigan where we have EZ absentee voting and no major polling place problems.
The local City Hall is two blocks and a large parking lot from our apartment. The Wisconsin Primary Election is in August. The Missus and I early-voted a week ago…all our votes were for Democrats.
this is a badly timed piece. because of covid a lot of places are having trouble finding people to man the polling placesthey’re usually senior citizens and that is the most at risk group.I’m wondering about my voting this november because my usual polling place is an old folks home and the people are stacked up in the halls
In Wisconsin’s primary election on April 7, the only one of 12 state primaries scheduled for April that didn’t get postponed (thanks to our vote-suppressing Republican-controlled Legislature and Supreme Court), we managed to get a fairly good turnout despite everything. But people had to wait in line for literally hours to vote. This was especially true in Milwaukee (the state’s largest city), where they had reduced the number of polling places from the normal 180 to 5. Nearly a hundred Milwaukeeans who had voted later came down with COVID-19 (tho of course it’s impossible to prove that they got it at the polls). Yeah, thanks, GOP, for giving us the choice between participating in the democratic process or risking a possibly fatal (and certainly awful) infectious disease.
This is not accidental, it’s a strategy. Paul Weyrich is widely regarded as the “founding father of the conservative movement”. He founded ALEC and co-founded the Heritage Foundation, Moral Majority, Council for National Policy, and Free Congress Foundation, among others.
Speaking in 1980 at a right-wing conference in Dallas, Weyrich set out the case for voter suppression: “I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people…. As a matter of fact our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”
The right wing and GOP are still acting on his advice to this day. Why? Because it works!
Suppressing the vote is a betrayal of the ideals of the United States of America, of course. Also, of course, Republicans betray America in PLENTY of other ways……..
The Robert’s court didn’t gut the Civil Rights Act. They just said that, in 2005, the data used for determining which areas fall under scrutiny cannot be from 1965 – you cannot use 40-year old data when looking at state restrictions…. you MUST update it – regardless of whether you like the outcome (pro/con). It’s not constitutional to keep using older and older information (the data would be 55 year old by the time of renewal). If it is still accurate, the new look would prove that. Sadly, Congress lacked the will on both sides to do just that – the GOP didn’t want to see things not change in their areas and the Democrats were afraid some areas would fall off and other areas in blue states would be put on.
