Who would have figured Bernice as a person who likes classical piano? I would have guessed something in the brass family or a good symphonic orchestra, if she wanted to drown out the sound of Luann.
Yep. Bernice has grown up and gotten serious about her life. She’s busy doing something on her laptop and has headphone on to mute her out. Luann, on the other hand, is fancy and footloose. She has time to lay on her bed and yabber. Jack is probably busy with his vet studies. She has two mature and serious friends. Time for you to grow up, Luann.
One question, Bernice must be taking summer classes, which is not surprising for an Alpha A earning student; I know this because the summer community college classes I teach, are for more focused and intense, lots of 4 year students taking courses to speed up their Bachelors, or prep for CPA, or add lab courses. She is serious, Luann is relaxing, someone who has not committed to doing anything for the summer. Driven versus laid back. I have said it before, in this strip opposites attract
Poor Luann. She has so many hopes of having great memories living with her best friend, but Bernice doesn’t seem to care about her. Puddles already knew it would happen. Let’s hope that by adapting to the situation Bernice will become less rigid.
Kudos to Bernice. It seems she has found a space and settled in. She could even move the bed so the head board is against a different wall so that when she really does want to sleep that too will work.
It’ll be just like psychodynamic therapy, Luann. You’ll never really be certain if the person listening to you thinks you’re an idiot, or if they’re really even listening at all.
I thought this was an interesting strip. I took it to mean that Luann and Bernice aren’t children anymore and Bernice is acting like the serious college student she is. I think it’s possible the point of this arc will be for Luann to make some changes in her own life. As others have said, it’s time to grow up.
While I do enjoy seeing Luann in her own strip, this week has been mostly filler. Yet again another case of we could be moving forward so much but we get days of meh.
It’s measure 11 of Chopin’s Nocturne in C Minor, Op. 48, No. 1. Epic nocturne; the only one that is almost on a par with his Ballades. Bernice has good taste!
I think this arc points up some interesting differences in the levels of maturity of both Bernice and Luann. Berniece seems serious and focused while Luann is still acting like a 13-year-old. I don’t know why she has been kept in this role for so long but she needs to grow up a little. It will make her significantly more interesting as a character.
Your life gets shaped by what you observe from friends. Hopefully, Luanne will learn that she is free to find something for herself that inspires positive passion.
Bernice knows how to set boundaries. I’m still surprised at how juvenile Luann still acts. She’s like an immature 10 year old, not a college student. That kind of a needy unfocused friend would drive me crazy. Hang a large heavy tapestry on the wall so you can get some sleep!
Death to Eardrums again. Will we ever be meeting this band? Their name is like a dad joke, or something. “You kids like your music too loud, unlike my generation!” Let’s hope Bernice’s pure little ears aren’t exposed to their music. That would be dastardly. Oh, those naughty rascals.
There seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether Bernice is purposely ignoring Luann by tuning her out or just going about her business and trying to concentrate on studying. I personally think a gap of time has gone by since they had the conversation we saw yesterday while Benice was first sitting on the bed. Now we see she’s gotten her books, notebook and laptop and laid them out for studying. I think there was a pause of silence and Bernice just decided to get to work, using her music to help her focus. I could be wrong but I really think the point of today’s strip is not conversational etiquette but showing that Luann is nostalgic for her high school buddy and how they used to interact while Bernice has grown up and is focused on her course work. If Bernice is purposely ignoring Luann the strip is funny in a kind of nasty sort of way. If Bernice is simply taking an adult approach to getting down to work it’s a more poignant look at how we can’t make time stand still, even with two longtime friends.
I don’t draw and I don’t tell stories, so I must yield to Greg. But, Greg is like Santa Claus with all the goodies. All I can do is ask him for gifts like Tiffany strutting her stuff or Rosa getting wild in a Peruvian jungle. If he doesn’t come through for me, there’s always the next year. And, by the way, the “real” Santa never gave me what I wanted either. I think that he’s just a humbug, after all.
Two final thoughts for the day. One, is that Bernice is spending about as much time listening to Luann through the wall as Brad did when Luann did it to him. The “circle will be unbroken…” because it’s rude to talk so someone through a wall. The second thought is that Luann is looking rather busty today even though she’s laying down.AND a third comment. the only thing ruder than copy-and-pasting the same comment numerous times thread is annoucing that you’re copy-and-pasting something because you won’t type it again. What a comment nazi.
So, I was wrong about it being E flat major. E flat major and c minor have the same key signature, but they’re two different keys. C minor is the relative minor of E flat major.
Many people think that Luann is immature. I see her as having the positive characteristics of childhood rather than the negative ones. Luann is a delightful person. She is childlike, rather than childish. She is curious, and likes to explore. She is innocent, trusting and accepting of others. She is able to express herself in innovative ways. She is imaginative and engages in simple fun. She is sweet, simple, pure and giving. She is a good person and loves her friends. She’s positive and recovers from setbacks. You can’t keep her down for long. She hasn’t found her future yet, but she will.
Maybe, Luann might have an existential crisis about her life.
Luann is twenty years old and still reminiscing her past life, Maybe, it is time for her edit her journals, and write a best seller. Her third grade friends are moving forward to adult life and careers.
It’s clear that no matter what Luann is shown doing, it will be a matter for the Hateables here to carp, yarp and criticize. When Luann proposed ideas for scenery for a play and the ideas proved to be good, the Hateables yarped that she had no training in this, so how could she suddenly have ideas. When Luann suggested a career idea to Jack, Luann was criticized for daring to venture into the ‘profession’ of counseling (of course, the same Hateables are willing and eager to accept words of nonwisdom from Bernice, who sees the profession of counseling as leaping to conclusions about people while not listening to anything they say. Luann and Jack studied together after waiting for Tara, but the Hateables insist that Luann never studies. Luann tries to make Bernice feel better about the upheavals in her life, and instead is just criticized for clinging to her childhood instead of buckling down to study. The reality is that there is not one single thing Luann could do that would ever be acceptable to the Hateables. I will be happy to scroll past all their posts, except I am concerned that newcomers to this ’toon may think that their attacks on Luann represent reality, and may miss out on a decent ’toon…
People are criticizing Luann for trying to talk to Bernice through the wall and praising Bernice for not realizing she’s trying to do so? Geez. No one’s doing anything unusual in this strip, apart from demonstrating that this friendship is depressing. These two just aren’t on the same page, as usual. That’s meant to be “funny”, I guess. Les and Gunther are soul mates by comparison.
I feel kind of sorry for Luann here. Though she’s not the one whose life was uprooted, and she’s still in the comfort of her lifelong home, she’s understandably excited to have her bff move in. I think she’s entitled to her own POV. She’s tried to make Bern feel welcome, and is sharing nostalgic history with her (wall talk). I would expect they =will= have some gabfests and good times. But it’s clear that Bernie is more introverted and focused, and Lu will have to understand that. They’ll figure it out.

The End to Luann’s dreams of the Endless Sleep-over party. I guess she’ll have to invite Tiffany over to have someone to talk to.
I noticed that the poster “Greg 8-1” on the wall in the first panel becomes “Who?” in two panel. I often wonder Greg Who myself.

Ah.
When in ‘doubt,’ TUNE her out, huh Bern?
Looks Bernice has finally made herself at “home” and is going to be just fine with this new “living arrangement.”
And Lu? If you want someone to talk to, why don’t you give brother Ben a call?
With all he’s been through, he could probably use a ‘sympathetic ear’ right about now. ;)
