One of the best descriptions of Star Wars I’ve seen is that it is like an issue of Planet Stories (the magazine) without the letter’s page.

I like Planet Stories … and Babylon 5 … and Star Trek … and Star Wars … and E.T. … and The (original) Day The Earth Stood Still … and The Lord of the Rings … and… well, you get the pciture.

And where does Lupin stand in all of this?

I was once in a bookstore looking through the Science Fiction section when a woman I did not know came up and said, “That is escapism.” I replied, “That is why I read it”, and went back to looking at books. Now and then you need to escape from everyday problems. You also need to know when to come back.

Second panel is pretty much what my writing teacher has said about Star Wars being fantasy, though IIRC he was more about how the Force is all magic and stuff. I’m not really a fan myself, but I’m still super amused at this whole thing.

I would have to put Star Wars in as sci-fi movie not fantasy. Fantasy IMHO is LOTR as well as anything by Piers Anthony. That may put Star wars in the same galaxy as Star Trek but they are still light years apart as far as sub genres go though. Star Trek is futuristic Utopian sci-fi while 2001 A Space Odyssey and Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy are Hard sci-fi. Some of the work by Turtledove (his World War series with reptilian invaders arriving at the start of WWII and A World of Difference where Mars is larger and has an oxygen atmosphere and life) is alternate history sci fi and Fahrenheit 451 and Logan’s run are dystopian sci-fi. Star Wars is a sub genre onto itself, I am not sure if I can pigeon hole it…,

One show I really enjoyed was People Of Earth. More comedy than science fiction I suppose, but I really wish they’d continued with it.

Elvis reminds me of my Mom. She’s a dear but what I call a “contrarian”. She has to be so right, that, even if you agree with her, you’re agreeing for the wrong reason.

Well, I don’t know about the rest, but I’m absolutely in agreement with the Man about Star Wars. Trust someone who’s both a long-time lover of sci-fi and as someone who’s actually taken classes on the subject (yes, I actually took a class on it in college—one of the best classes I ever had :D)—Star Wars is really not that great of a sci-fi, but before you whip out those lightsabers, that’s largely because it doesn’t really intend to. It’s more focused on the spectacle and the adventure…it’s really more of an action/adventure movie that just happens to be set in space than anything else.

Not that this makes Star Wars “bad” or anything, of course. Personally, I wouldn’t call myself a Star Wars fan per se, but I have seen all of the films to date and was still able to enjoy them for what they are…and at the end of the day, that’s really what’s more important. :)

Today is “Compliment Your Mirror” Day. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, ain’t I got no sense at all? Why would I ask you, when all you show is reverse reality? At least what you show is as honest as you can make it, unlike what I see in other panes of glass, inevitably.

Frankly, complimenting my mirror, or any mirror, is more that a bit of a stretch. And why would I compliment something that says “Objects in view are closer than they appear”? Fat lot of good that does.

I am not into any of that stuff. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, not my cups of tea

There is the valid genre of the Science Fantasy. This uses a science fiction setting for cautionary tales, often nearly direct translations of classic fairy tales. Lost in Space, for example, had one episode which was a pretty close adaptation of “The Frog Prince.”

Star Wars is nonsense. And Star Trek is ridiculous. Just think, which advanced creatures would invent a device as lame as a light sabre? And it’s impractical in the first place for that’s not how light works. And Star Trek… Where do I begin!

Actually, Star Wars is Sci-fi/Fantasy. It has common elements of so many sci-fi movies and TV shows; high technology (blasters, lightsabers, computers, shields, lasers, landspeeders, cyborgs), space setting, alien planets (Tatooine, Hoth, Bespin, Yavin IV, the Forest Moon of Endor) robots (Artoo, Threepio, numerous astromechs, medical droids) space ships (Star Destroyers, X-Wings, TIE Fighters, the Millenium Falcon), aliens. At the same time it has some of the common themes of many fantasy movies and TV shows; magic (the Force) wizards (Jedi and Sith) swords and sword fights (lightsabers and lightsaber duels), ghosts (Force-spirits).

As for the man’s arguement that Star Wars having a princess can’t make it sci-fi, wasn’t it established in the fifth movie that Spock’s half brother was the son of a Vulcan PRINCESS.

As a final note, looks like Puck is looking to alienate all the other fandoms.

We all have our preferences, but the best is being a fan of all of them.

Just got my Fluffy Yellow Blanket & a tote with The Boys at the anchor desk in the mail yesterday!! i can report that it is indeed fluffy & yellow, but the size i got is more of a throw than a blanket. I’m sitting here holding on to it like Linus (without the thumb sucking) and feeling very secure. absolutely LOVE it!!

OT – weight (again!)

Hi, asking for some support – I need to stay scared so I continue to eat more healthfully. I was just at my Drs and i’m back up to 252,(i’m only 5’) am prediabetic and she was worried that i had heart failure. thank God that’s ok, but that gave me the kick in the butt to start eating more healthfully, but i’ve got a long journey ahead, 130 steps (aka 130 lbs) and I tend to get bogged down and discouraged several times along the way. i’m seriously thinking about getting a heartbeat tattoo on one of my left fingers to remind me. thanks and love!

Has anyone ever wanted the next book in the series but someone you know has it and they take forever to read it?, i do that happened to me a couple of weeks ago and it was UNBEARABLE TORTURE. (I like reading if this is not obvious yet.)

I really like the well know classic fantasy such as LOTR or harry potter, but one of my all time favorite fantasy worlds is discworld by terry Pratchett. are there any other discworld fans out there?

I never cared for the Star Wars series. I saw the first three, I have no interest in seeing the rest. Star Trek was okay when it first ran, although I never could stand Kirk. I liked Spock, Sulu, and Scotty. I do love the Lord of the Rings, anything Heinlein, Lovecraft, or Poe based, and the Harry Potter series was entertaining.
