I’m guessing that Dr. Mel has never heard of test flight protocols. Normally, the initial flights of a new craft contain minimal crew and other precautions are taken. On space craft, it would make sense for the crew to wear pressurized extravehicular suits, and there may be one guy in the back wearing an additional rocket pack just incase something like this happens.
