Bookstore woman doesn’t understand. They need to go to Tommy’s woman. She is more in tune with the language of the furry ones. Maybe this could be Wicket’s moment to be a hero. He could easily ferry Beatrix safely to the ground.

If your dog is a non-barker and he’s barking up a storm, let the wheels turn. At least stay with him awhile.

Yeah. Who are you calling an old cat? That’s an ancient antique, a real relic, a prehistoric specimen, see? That cat belongs in a museum, and not in an ol’ barn, see?

Just shut your mouth – don’t bark no more

Ignore that old cat who’s at your door

Go lay down on the kitchen floor

You ain’t gonna scare that cat from this bookstore

    Yakety yak (Don’t bark back)

Just finish pickin’ up your toys

Let’s see you be a good, good boy

Get all your chewies out of sight

Bea’ll be back – no need to be uptight

    Yakety yak (Don’t bark back)

You just put on a fresh clean hat

And straighten out your kitchen mat

And when you finish doin’ that

Go apologize to that old cat

    Yakety yak (Don’t bark back)

Don’t you give me no puzzled looks

I’m book smart, I know what cooks

Just tell your ancient friend outside

You ain’t goin’ for no ride

    Yakety yak (Don’t bark back)

    Yakety yak, yakety yak (4x)

    Update on our tiger:

    1) The deputy who first saw it called it in and said it appeared to be around “four to six months old but wasn’t sure how to judge the age of that kind of animal.”

    2) No one other than the deputy and two other people have seen it as far as I know.

    3) The zoo is now asking if there’s any possibility that the animal could be something other than a tiger…like a cougar or a bobcat. It was first spotted late at night at an industrial park, so it’s possible that the deputy didn’t get a good look at it.

    4) Still hasn’t been caught at this point…assuming that it’s not a cougar/bobcat.

    5) The tiger has a twitter account because of course it does.

You gotta mix it up, Trevor. Throw in some whines and wags and wiggles. Dance at the door. Push your nose into the windowpane and pin it there. Stare at the street.

My cat’s most urgent meowing is reserved for a “prey arriving” notice. The day she caught a rabbit, I could hear meowing constantly from the neighbor’s yard for several minutes before she figured out how to get it over the six-foot fence. It was a lot of effort and I must not have been sufficiently impressed because she has stuck to lizards and rodents since.

Fists on hips? Either the international sign for “I’m inDIGnant!” or “I’m a SUperhero!”

    Either works for Baba Mouse!

    Today is:

National Emergency Responders Day —One description I read of the requirements for these people said they must be “… of strong physical and mental health.” The problem is, most of them have little or no recourse to mental health care, and are often reluctant to use what little they have. Therefore, I think our first priority in honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance should be the removal of all official stigma from mental health care. That would be a start. Many first responders fear that seeking or getting mental health care will have a negative effect on their careers, or even their personal rights—and in many cases, this is true. Please give it some thought and write your state and federal representatives and senators.

Libraries Remember Day —They do, or should. These are the real repositories of history, often in multiple versions from different points of view, which is a very good thing. In my informed opinion, the US educational “system” does a horrifyingly lousy job of teaching history, which means we are doomed† to repeat it—and we are. There are some teachers and professors who try, and even succeed, but they are few, and the system is huge.

    †See, Robin is right!

Make Your Bed Day —Well, I actually planned to, but the cost of lumber was too high, so I bought one instead …

So now I think I’ll go lie in it and take a nap.

Bulb Panting Day —I tried, but none of them ever came up. I even went to the store and bought special “grain-of-wheat” bulbs. Still, nothing came up. I know they “don’t grow on trees,” but I figured that meant they grew on bushes, or maybe sprouted like cabbages, sort of like Cabbage Patch™ dolls.

Ok, the bookstore lady not being worried about Beatrix going missing reminds me of last summer (Sept 2023) when one of our yard cats disappeared. He was an intact tom who had a habit of vanishing and reappearing (which was why he was still intact; I couldn’t be sure he’d be here for his fix-it appointment). So when he disappeared again, I figured he’d be back.

Three days passed. No sign of him. And then we heard a cat YELLING for all he was worth from under a shed in the yard. The missing tom had crawled under the shed and gotten stuck!

Everything turned out fine: we got him out, took him inside to stay, and finally got his long-delayed fix-it date. He still yells a lot, but now his life doesn’t literally depend on him being heard.

So I understand the bookstore lady’s casual “She’ll be back,” because that was my reaction too. She doesn’t know—as I didn’t know—that this time the missing kitty was stuck and couldn’t come home!
