So Ben begins the week looking for Bernice to talk to her and ends the week depending on Luann to talk to her instead. Monday I said he would forget why he came to the DeGroot’s. Since he’s going away without doing the thing he came to do I Win ….not that it a competition or anything. And how will Luann talk to Bernice? “Say, Bern, remember when you asked if Gunther was getting laid and I went and asked and got into a lot of trouble? Well you owe me one. What’s up woth Ben?”
Ben – "Luann? Since I’ve forgotten why I came over here in the first place due to the on-going amnesia epidemic, could you please be a patsy, uh I MEAN, a “pal,” and ask Bernice what’s up?"
Luann – “Uh, sure Ben. I’ll be glad to get right in the middle of your personal family business.”
Ben – "Thanks Luann! You’re a true friend! Oh, by the way. Could you look after my kids for a few years? I met this guy named Jonah who knows a place in Hollywood that’s hiring.
By making Luann do the work, he’s avoiding Bernice like she’s avoiding him. Good job, dude. And when I read Luann Againn, well, when does Luann start ignoring peanut-head? They’re always pestering each other.
So it seems that the arc has arched to its next flow, Luann talking too Bernice about her brother, and all that might develop from that branch of this complex story line. All kinds of developments can occur besides this one, but given Luann’s punch line about her brother in panel 3 HILARITY ENSUES!
Why do I hear the sound of the world’s toniest violin playing? Ben has told Luann a lot of stuff about his life. He has done so much in four short years that either the writer thinks it’s been 13 years since they last met or Ben is telling one fib after another. Since so much of it doesn’t make much sense I’m going with the Munchhausen explanation. His adoptive parents are conveniently out of the way. His wife, if he has one, is on the other side of the world. And the twins? Who knows what they are? For all we know Ben may not actually be Ben but an imposter which would explain why Ben does not much resemble the Army Sgt Luann remembers.
So either Buttinski Degroot makes a mortal enemy of Bernice next week or we skip to Tiffany original never been in the work before truck farm idea. Or Leslie pesters Bets and her appendage to put on another webcast so he can act like a silly goose again.
I just hope tomorrow’s Sunday page will be Shannon free.
I think Luann is in way over her head. If Bernice wanted to talk about it, and/or thought Luann was a good person to talk with about her situation, she would have by now.
I love seeing how Ben wants to be a good brother to his sister. I met so many people that stopped seeing their siblings. And even where they were right to do that, there was always a lot of sadness and pain. Asking Luann to help him it’s the best thing to do. Luann loves her and Bernice consider her a sister, she’s probably the only person she would listen to without telling her to mind her own business and go away.
Luann, and, Brad have both matured in their attitudes toward each other since they were kids. And,as far as being human, Brad has matured a lot more than you, Luann. He has a good job, in a very happy marriage, which gave you a niece you don’t seem to mind hanging out with, and, probably sometime in the future, a nephew, or, another niece.
Bernice has good radar. Ben probably set off her alerts and she’s been avoiding him. Not wanting to be asked to babysit his kids would be my number one reason to avoid him. Then there’s also the fact her parents chose to house him over her, which of course is no reason for resentment. They never did explain why she lost her dorm room. It’s one of those nagging details that never gets answered by G&K. I think it had something to do with that epic party in the dorms that Tiffany fooled her into not finding.
It could be that Bernice is jealous of Ben’s much more exciting/fulfilling life! She is heading into her third year of university and she still cannot get a boyfriend. Or she could be a racist. The story implied that ben married a Philippine woman that had two children . Or, she is jealous that Ben is living with her parents. We will just have to wait for more hints from the writer.
We are missing all the characters involved in this mystery. Maybe Ben is living a delusional life and there is no wife and kids. Soon, he will have to return to the Veterans’ hospital and continue his in-patient treatment. Luann must guard herself and Puddles from a psycho on the loose.
Here we are at the end of the week and, so far, the possibility of Ben as a romantic diversion for Luann has been a bust. It’s possible that the eponymous character, Luann, may be auditioning for a part in the movie Bridesmaids II, The Never Ending Ennui!
Blood relation doesn’t mean there’s a bond. She never even knew about this guy until he showed up briefly, then left again. She’s supposed to be all warm and fuzzy?
I’m with Luann, sort of. Thirteen years ago (4 in Luanntime?) for almost all of 2007, she spent time with him, was proud, acted like a big sister, didn’t give him a chance to talk as she’d spout out his accomplishments, was protective of him and a bit jealous when she found out he was emailing Luann more and confiding in her more (thinking of the leg injury, he didn’t want to upset Bernice), and finally she admitted to Luann being jealous of Luann, her “sister” was silly. Unless she’s being shallow and his appearance bothers her, I don’t think Ben is her issue.
I still think she has other interests, perhaps Jack, that she’s hesitant to tell Luann about. And for a while, Dez kept popping up. Maybe someone else entered her world. Whatever her reasoning, it will be interesting if, when confronted by Luann, she still is reluctant to spill the beans. Oooo, the suspense ‘til Monday!
I’m thinking the comic strip is called “Luann” so maybe get her involved as often as remotely plausible since it happens often enough that she isn’t involved in a story line.
I think Bern is living a double life. I think she is out partying with the A hall gang. Everyone expects Bern to be a bookworm, non-party goer and a bore. In secret, she goes back to her old dorm, drinks and parties down.
I have to agree with Ben that being related does not guarantee a relationship. I was recently reunited with a son I gave up for adoption 46 years prior. While I would love to develop a loving familial relationship with him, right now it feels like a distant friendship. We exchanged birthday greetings and that’s about it for the past year.
Forgive me if this has already been asked and answered, and if it has I obviously missed it. I thought I was following “Luann” back in 2007 but I sure don’t remember seeing the arc with Ben (then in the Army) visiting. My question is, has he been seen any other time since then, up until Bernice mentions that he’s out of work and will be staying with the Halpers for a while (co-incidental with Bernice needing a new place to stay)?
Stay out of it, Luann. Too bad you were home and Bern wasn’t. Then Ben would have had to confront his sister instead of getting you to do it. Man up, soldier.
Luann must have ignored Brad at a point “Luann Againn” hasn’t depicted yet. Why would Luann tell Ben about her relationship with peanut-head several years ago anyway? LOL! Good job, bot!

Brad and Luann were classic Brother and Sister combatants. Brad became an adult while Luann is still waiting to be an Adult one day.
