To be more specific, pirates (and other sailors) would sometimes cover one eye so they could more easily switch between working above and below deck. However, a lot of them really did lose eyes for the same reason they’re associated with peg legs and hook hands. It was dangerous work and medical care wasn’t exactly advanced on ships back then.

I do remember one guy saying that if he liked limburger cheese he wouldn’t waste money buying it, he would just scrape it from between his toes.

Hmm… The story I heard was that several sailors burned out their retina by trying to use a sextant on the sun.

It is a known fact: enter a dark area with one eye closed, once you are completely surrounding with darkness, open your eyes and you will see more clearly.

I remember way back when I was in my late teens, I took driver’s Ed and the instructor told us that as you approach a tunnel, to close one eye and once you have entered into the darkened tunnel to open it again and you would not go through the several seconds of readjustment that it normally takes. I experimented a few times with and without closing one eye, and sure enough, the one eye trick worked like a charm every time, my vision readjusting instantaneously each time.

Go ahead, try it next time you are about to drive into a tunnel, but remember, close only one eye, not both! ☺

So when they wear the patch during the day, they’re anticipating night. During the day it would make the bright sunlight more intense.

Alas, all they could see was the inside of the eyepatch.

So that’s where toe cheese comes from.

If brevibacterium lives on feet and these feet are used to stomp grapes does brevibacterium flavor wine too?

The artist did well, he has the “aroma” of the cheese wafting to the nose of a grimacing pirate.

A sea pirate saw another whom he had not seen for several years. While talking, the first said “I see time hasn’t been good to ye. Since I’ve last seen ye, ye lost an eye, a leg, and a hand. What happened to ye?”

“Waaaaallll, it were about 3 year ago, we were attacking a Spanish treasure ship. They opened fire, and some shot hit me in the leg. It were 10 months ago, we were boarding a British merchant ship. In the fighting, a cutlass struck me on the wrist. I lost me eye 3 months ago, when I looked up to check the rigging on me ship. A seagull flew over, and plopped right in me eye.”

“Arrrrr! That be unpleasant, mighty unpleasant indeed. But, I don’t see how it cost ye yer eye.”

“Waaaaalll, ye see, it were the first day I had me hook.”

Fun thing to do when you have to turn on the light in middle of night, cover one eye. Let other eye adjust to light, then shut off light. It’s like your blind on one eye. I used to make my friends do this at sleepovers. What wacky fun we had!

Baumgartner’s (Monroe WI) claim to fame is their limburger sandwich. Limburger & raw onions on marble rye.

Won’t you be kissing sweet after that!

The eye patch reason is disputed. It’s plausible but undocumented, and some think the downside would outweigh the upside.

The patch might have aided seeing in the dark, but I still think it didn’t help depth perception. This would explain why so many pirates kept bumping into the masts…

Pirates also covered just one nostril, to help them smell better in the dark. BELIEVE IT, OR DON’T!
