The highest point in the Lower Peninsula is just over 1700 feet. All the old high points were scraped off by the glaciers and dumped into Ohio and Indiana.
And it is indeed a port. Which does happen to be a fair way up the Columbia from the ocean… which also happens to be where the Willamette River merges wiith it, and there’s a lot of other transportation: Good place for a port.
In my country, the few hills we have, have got ‘mountain’ as part of their name. The one in my small city is so low, that foreign students when visiting said mountain are really disappointed en ask where the rest of the mountain is.
In my area there is a Piney Grove where they cut down all the pines, but the streets are named for everygreens.
There is an Autumn Hills, where they leveled the hills before building. The streets are named for the types of tobacco that used to be grown there a few generations ago.
In my home town — Madison, Wisconsin — there’s a strip mall called Lakepoint Commons, which isn’t near a lake, isn’t on a point, and doesn’t have a common area.
Very odd comment – there are many cities with ports that aren’t on the ocean, including Portland. Rivers, anyone? But surely he knows this and is just expressing a kid’s view? Hopefully.
What? No mention of Crown Point, which is roughly across the river from Mount Pleasant? (Mt. Pleasant is on the Washington side.) Or maybe we’ll get to the Crown Point later….
Suburban Chicago, there’s a little cluster with Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, and Prospect Heights. All quite flat, except for one hill in Arlington Heights, which I think is artificial. There is Des Plaines nearby, which is not pronounced the way a Frenchman would think it is.

All this talk of Portland minimizes the real importance of StarboardLand that has escaped most searchers of the real truth!!

Is it at least pleasant, if it’s just a hill?

Portland does have major port. It is also connected to the Pacific via the Columbia River.

I wonder how many Mt. Pleasants there are? There are two in NY State. One is an actual mountain though, not a town.

I’m originally from the Mt. Pleasant “just up the road,” and yes, it IS pleasant. Although we also wondered about the “Mt.” part…

There may be more ports away from the ocean, than there are on the ocean. New York has a slew of canal ports on the Erie Canal.

It’s a land with a port… why is any discussion necessary? Why does a port need to be on the ocean?
Now, if they tried to call Portland “Ocean City,” that’d be another thing entirely.

Many ports are as far up a river as is navigable. This makes a lot of sense.

But enough about all this talk about Portland. The important question is, What will Caulfield be for Halloween this year?

“Mt. Pleasant”, SC has a mean elevation of 13 feet, with a low point of minus 20 feet. So much for the “Mt.” part…

Not all ports are directly on the ocean. Many ports for “deepwater” ships are not.
