Try crossing the road without that “dictate” I see you smeared under the wheel of an 18 wheeler in the not too distant future – or becoming a feature in a windshield of a car.

Mentioned earlier: comic arc shows a motorcycle cop about to write-up a chicken for jay-walking, but says instead, OK! OK! I’ll tear up the ticket if you just tell my WHY you did it!! One of the best plays on this old conundrum.

If you’re going to “cross a road” these days, be sure to look both ways, listen carefully, and watch your steps. And be prepared to change directions and your pace. The ones who are controlling the traffic lights and other signs don’t necessarily have your best interests in mind.

That’s not a dictate. That is essentially a statement saying, “If you choose to walk, now would be a good time.”

Civilization is based on people being willing to forego some personal freedoms for the better good.

Sometime willing to forego personal freedom comes as a result of coercion. We have laws prohibiting people’s personal freedom to murder other people or to rape them or to rob them or for even simple things like forcing them to stop for school busses or red lights. But make a law prohibiting people to infect other people with a potentially lethal disease and somehow a different reality exists.

People should be willing not to rape, burn, pillage, plunder and infect without these laws. Most people don’t need these laws, they are willing to forego these activities without having to be told not to do them. Those that do not have the moral strength and disobey them are criminals.

As usual, the writer of this strip is using a poor analogy to advocate blindly doing something just because the government says it is the “right thing to do” and “safe”. Walk/Don’t Walk lights are timed to the traffic lights. However, just because it says “Walk” does not mean it is safe to cross the street, you still MUST look both ways to make sure it is safe. People do run red lights! On a more serious note, I recommend looking up “Thalidomide Babies”. Deemed safe for pregnant women, it resulted in severely deformed babies.

But there is no requirement to walk when the sign says “walk”. And the chicken doesn’t lose it’s job as a chicken if it doesn’t walk.
