A cord is still 128 cu ft, no matter how you stack it….

I sympathize, Arlo. I once ordered a cord of firewood. When I saw how much it turned out to be, I paid to have 3/4 of it taken back. (And years later I still have about 1/8 of a cord remaining, although extremely well-seasoned. I should use my fireplace more often.)

Yup. Have two. One half of one next to the wall just outside, the other half in the garage and the other one in the barn. Probably won’t touch the one in the barn except to bring it out next year, but you never can tell up here.

It’s certainly one of those hotdog/bun issues. Thing is, most wood racks are 4′×8′ and are designed to hold what we (well most people) would call a “face” cord, which is 1/3 of a cord. (if you think of the 4′×8′ length by width and then 3-16" pieces ‘deep’ for the 4’ ‘depth’) So, you are buying ‘the face’ (or front 1/3) of the cord as it were.

That should last through Christmas. My wife and cat love our hot wood stove.

    4X4X8 is a cord unless it’s a face cord.

Often when you buy a cord of wood it’s a “face cord”, meaning it’s 4’ tall and 8’ wide but less than 4’ deep.

Arlo bought a cord of firewood. Which is a lot of wood for just recreational use in a Southern State. A typical piece of firewood is two feet long. If Arlo stacked them one piece deep, he’d have an eight by eight foot wall of wood.

What is a cord of wood? Its a hell of a lot of work if you are chopping carrying, splitting, and stacking it yourself

I love my gas fireplace! It even works when electricity goes out, which is extremely rare here. I don’t miss dealing with a real fireplace.

I had a great uncle who said he could make more money stacking wood than any other way. Reckon he left enough air spaces that a cord didn’t take as much wood. Sad really.
