As dour as it sounds, the separation of the conjoined triplets was considered a success.

Flashback of the family portrait Branwell Brontë painted of his sisters. He was originally in the centre (of course) but he painted himself out, leaving an ugly “pillar” to dominate the painting. Looking at it today one wonders how his family could consider he had artistic potential, and the reason he never actually presented his letters of recommendation to the Academy becomes clear.
