To Hobbes, there just isn’t enough tuna in the world. Especially if it’s on toasted sourdough with mayonnaise and a side of cheese puffs. Or as I call it, Sunday lunch!
it is no less than criminal that anyone goes hungry or homeless in this country. As President, that will be my first priority…. which is why I won’t be elected. Our wonderful government can easily think in terms of billions or even trillions of dollars, but they can’t quite wrap their heads around a three dollar meal for a child, or a safe place to sleep…. ah well, as long as you still get to fly first class to your next photo op….
My mother always tried to guilt us about not finishing our food with “Think of the starving Chinese children.” It never made the least amount of sense. It’s not like they were going to get the remains of the food off our plates after all.
I’ve been poor at times, but I count myself fortunate, because I’ve never missed a meal. Grocery prices have risen about 15% lately, and there have been some shortages in the grocery stores, but I save money by buying in bulk and cooking from scratch, but I don’t know what the future will bring.
True hunger is painful, Hobbes. The munchies is different.I have learned not to say I’m “starving.” I may feel very hungry for my next meal, I may want a snack, but I am not starving. There’s food in the fridge and freezer—something that many people in my own city cannot say. Since the pandemic killed so many jobs, many many families are going hungry. Our city just erected Europe’s tallest “tree of lights” for Christmas, but when the local branch of Caritas asked for help from the regional government because the food pantries are empty, that was a no. Knowing what that tree of lights cost to erect, not just the priest was disgusted.
I agree with John (above)I grew up in a middle class home and nice community and it was a shock to me to find out that hunger in America existed. Shouldn’t be that way! If everyone, who can, would donate to food pantry we can solve this!
Never apologize for good eating. Many people sacrificed their all to get us were we are today. Not just military but pioneers, homesteaders, farmers, ranchers, railroad builders, ships crews, and more. All of them worked for a better life and some of them were our relatives.
Sorry, Calvin. Giving people things they need is labeled “Socialism” and is considered anti-American. Even when they work three jobs to make ends meet, other people don’t want them to have nice things.
The CDC estimates at least 42% of Americans are Obese; not just overweight, OBESE. Americans have a hunGRY problem, not a hunGER problem. We eat too much.
Food is a basic necessity of life, and way too many people are starving. Therefore, I encourage everyone to donate to food banks, Meals on Wheels, or any other organization that feeds people. Even $5 would help if thousands of people would donate that amount.
As I said above, our food bank says their problem is not money, or supply of food; the problem is not enough volunteers to pack and distribute the food.
If “one in six children in America has to deal with hunger”, it’s because the responsible adults are too lazy, drunk, stupid or stoned to apply for the myriad programs available to feed them.
30 years later, I think we should be glad we won’t know Watterson’s opinion of this. But do remember and aid those in need all year long. Merry Christmas.
Considering how Calvin never lifts a finger to help around the house, has parents who are so idiotic they do not even know their own names and does poorly in public school, it is like he already has his future set as living with his parents until they die, then being a lazy slob on food stamps.

World hunger is a problem of distribution, not production.
Was this one of the Comic Relief episodes all the strips published on Thanksgiving Day?

It’s odd; when the pandemic appeared and the nation was in quarantine, people ran out to buy—not food or bottled water—but paper products!
After all, is TP more important than food? Eventually, your insides would be completely empty, and you wouldn’t need it!!
