I think I heard of Mr. Nesmith’’s passing less than an hour ago. And earlier today, I had been remembering “I’m Gonna Buy Me A Dog.” Yes, that was Mickey and Davy, but it somehow still seems appropriate.
The Monkees were just a plain fun band to listen to and watch every Saturday morning/early afternoon when I was growing up. They retained their fans over the years and for good reason. Mickey & Mike just finished their final concert gig and were scheduled to play on a cruise with the Beach Boys and The Temptations in March. I’ll be curious if Mickey still will make the show.
Sad news. They were such an obvious rip-off of the Beatles that I was never a big fan, but all four were talented people. They were hugely popular among my peers in grades 5-7. At least they performed their own material, unlike Milli Vanilli.
I had an oldies playlist and was enjoying some of their songs the other day, including “Last Train to Clarksville” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday”. RIP Michael and thanks for the great tunes.
Thanks for this tribute. I always liked the Monkees. Mike was my favorite. My husband mentioned his passing to me last night. Thanks again for your timely ’toon tribute.
I never missed the Monkees TV show and have every album, group and solo. Their music improved when they got to play the instruments from “Headquarters” on.
I was and still am a fan, I actually bought their new Christmas album a couple of years ago. I thought it was pretty good. Since my wife died in March I have been very emotional and yes when I hear about someone I “knew” like Michael tears flow. The Monkees were a part of my younger days and I enjoyed the show. I am sorry for the families loss. Maybe I will be right behind him soon.
Thanks for the moving tribute! That was fast. Not many strips have that quick turnaround.
I enjoyed watching Monkees reruns when I was in college, though didn’t know much about what they did since the show. Glad to find out from the news that he had a long and fruitful career!
Wow, same age as me. Never realized that when I got given concert tickets to Maple Leaf Gardens and took a teen friend. We were in nosebleed and you couldn’t hear a thing but she was happy
The Monkees were much better than most people gave them credit for. The music for the first two albums was already recorded before they even got to the studio but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have played. They did perform in concert and they palyed their instruments on all albums from Headquarters on.
I always thought Mickey had the best voice. Davy was great at ballads and Broadway-type numbers and Mike had a more country feel to his voice. Peter really wassn’t much of a singer, but he was a great guy by all accounts.
I remember seeing some of his videos on MTV when it first started. I especially remember “Flying Down to Rio” and “Sunset Sam” (I think that was the title). Might spend the afternoon watching “Elephant Parts” and “Doctor Duck’s Super Secret All-Purpose Sauce”.
Just remembered: I think I have a copy of their “Headquarters” album. It was one of the few we saved when we dumped our vinyl for CDs some 20+ years ago.
My favorite Monkee! I always thought Mike Nesmith was the coolest, with the knit cap. I think of him every time I put on my own green knit cap, but I’ll never look as good as he did! RIP Mike, you made millions of us happy.
I was a fan from the moment I was first able to reach my handed-down turntable. Followed him from the Monkees to the First National Band to his solo career. Saw his solo tour several years ago and finally got to see him perform with Micky less than two months ago. It truly felt like a farewell tour and I feel blessed to have seen Papa Nez performing his Monkees songs.
I have seen all four Monkees in concert as many of you probably have. One of the best concerts I remember was in South Bend, Indiana where they played for 2 plus hour straight without a break and it seemed like their entire catalog. What made the concert so great was the running screen in the background before and throughout the concert showing old commercials, clips and other things throughout the years. I didn’t want to go home.
Wow, I could almost hear that Texas “Twang” in his voice in that second panel. Loved the Monkees, wasn’t sure about “HEAD” though. I’d have to watch it again.

Thanks for the tribute, John and Scott. Listen to the Band is definitely one of his best songs. And he had a great sense of humor.
