Nice kick by Lizz! I’m sure she could have easily dealt with the second attacker if Jerry King hadn’t seen what was happening while he exited the bistro with his coffee.
Jerry King is this strip’s equivalent to retired professional wrestler and current wrestling commentator Jerry Lawler, nicknamed “The King.” Lawler is a friend of writer Mike Curtis and this is the fourth time he has appeared in the strip.
In the 2012 story where Patty Cure had organized a charity wrestling match to help the Mole’s homeless families, King was one of the announcers at the match. When Mole confronted Thunderchild inside the ring about his theft of the charity money, a physical confrontation broke out between the two and King left his ringside announcer’s desk to intervene.
In a 2016 story, King was the best man at the Mole’s wedding.
In a 2019 story about sportswriter and serial killer Barnabas Tar, Barnabas was shown finishing up the writing of an interview he had done with King.
Crimestoppers Textbook this week reminds me of an urban legend:
Three white women from the Deep South who were afraid of African-Americans were visiting New York for the first time. They were in an elevator when Reggie Jackson came on with his guard dog Lady. RJ said “Sit, Lady!” and all three of them sat on the elevator floor!
Lizz really let fly on the first guy but it looks like that if Jerry hadn’t’ve stepped in that 2nd guy could have gotten Lizz with the blackjack (no relation).
I see there are already police cars with flashing lights approaching, which gives me faint hope that those of us who speculated yesterday this might have been a set-up to get the two goons out of the picture might still be right. But I’m afraid the story won’t go there, and we’ll be left with no plausible reason for Lizz to have met Sam so openly. Plus, the only way we as readers know she was handing off fingerprint samples is because the husband of one of the creative team told us that. Nothing has been said within the story so far to help us understand that. Gould used to have dialog after the action to explain how the police got there – the best example I can think of is how they were on the scene to capture Spots. I’m hoping Monday will give us a good explanation about this.
Interesting misdirect – that shadowy person in first panel in row 2 made me think there was an Apparatus guy in the background who was smoking, but instead it was Jerry King (presumably) holding a cup of coffee :)
So one unbelievable coincidence — Liz, still in undercover mode, meets in a public space with Sam & just happens to be seen by 2 Apparatus henchmen — leads to a second coincidence, Liz being rescued by an obscure secondary character who hasn’t been seen in years. Mike is seriously burning through what little capital he has left with Dick Tracy readers.
So, it really was Lizz and Sam, stupidly meeting in public while she was in her undercover disguise! And even if we accept the explanation by Tarry Plaguer given twice buried in Replies to Neil’s New Year’s greeting post yesterday, that Lizz is handing over potential fingerprint evidence to Sam (something only close followers of these Comments could ever know!), it was still a foolish meet! And then for two thugs from the Apparatus to happen to be in the same Bistro at the same time, and add upon that Jerry King (based closely on Jerry “the King” Lawler) also being there buying a coffee, is some mind-boggling concatenation of Coincidence!
It is good to see Lizz in action, kicking the snot out of the big, dumb goon in the green jacket (whom we’ve seen at Apparatus HQ). And good old Jerrry King just chances to be on the spot to take out the other thug who was about to cosh Lizz from behind!
With the two thugs down and out before they could inform Apparatus HQ of what they’d seen, maybe Lizz’s cover is not blown. But this whole Bistro sub-arc really puts a lot of pressure on our “willing suspension of disbelief”….

Lizz role-plays as Patty Cure, so mindful of her feet
Delia screens the applicants, the escorts who shall greet
Gentlemen with pockets full. No trouble with their debts
Free with cash and champagne splash. Big times and no regrets.
Cook the books so Taxman looks and sees nothing amiss
Delia likes it in the field with this and that and this.
Lizz reports on what went down. She exits off stage right
Bad boys have the upper hand until they start to fight.
Lizz kicks some tail. She likes to wail. Yet trouble lurks behind
“The King” steps up to do his part. A helper skilled and kind.

I thought Lizz’ eyes were supposed to be blue and now it looks like Team Tracy is taking color cues from MC.

Well, I hope the MCU got all the info they wanted, since Lizz’s cover is now blown.

Nice action sequence. Lizz is really cool.

Wow, those police cruisers arrived fast. Literally less than a minute after Lizz was attacked, there they are.
Actually, I have to think a lot of time passed between the penultimate and ultimate panels, but then why doesn’t Lizz see Mr. King until then?

Ok, so yesterday, when the ruffian said to his partner “LET’S GET HER”, he left out a word – “HAIR!”

I’m going back to 1969,when Intro’s daughter was running rackets out of her restaurant ,THE PAINTED LADY.
She specialized in attacking women with long hair.
So Lizz baited the crooks with an outrageous wig and herattackers got a big surprise,
