National Eggnog Day. I just polished off the last of my eggnog, but I drank it after midnight, so it was officially Eggnog Day when I drank it. I don’t buy it often because it’s so gosh darn expensive. Just the non-alcoholic stuff you get from the dairy section of the grocery store.
Last-minute Shopper’s Day. I try not to do that. But at the last minute, I decided that I’d bake my niece, Michelle a birthday cake and I’d take it to our Christmas dinner. Her birthday is December 29 and she’s been looking forward to it since July. She is developmentally disabled -a result of fetal alcohol syndrome, as both her parents drank quite a bit in those days. I’ve heard that alcohol can affect the sperm so even dad’s drinking prior to conception can contribute to fetal alcohol syndrome. Her mom drank while pregnant and as a result, Michelle paid the price. Anyway, I decided to bake her a cake since I have to work on her birthday and can’t be there for her birthday party. So, my last-minute shopping will be either powdered sugar so I can make frosting for her cake, or a can of ready-made frosting. My homemade frosting tastes better than canned frosting, but canned frosting is quicker and easier, so I’m leaning that way.
I am so NOT looking forward to work today! The day before Christmas and I don’t know what the managers were thinking (they couldn’t have been thinking at all) because several cashiers are ON VACATION. I heard that we have only ONE closing cashier! And only 2 cahiers all day. I have to go to bed soon since I work an earlier shift today and I have to get up in 7 hours to get ready to go to work. And with practically no cashiers, I know I’ll likely be stuck on the registers all day and most of our registers have been updated from the old-fashioned ones that I was trained on (nearly 17 years ago) to touch screen registers which I had NO training on. So I feel so stupid because I don’t know how to do things on those touch screen registers and I keep having to ask someone to help me and then I get all stressed out. UGH! I’m so NOT looking forward to going to work today!
We had RAIN ALL DAY yesterday!!! The Owens Valley where I live is known as the “land of little rain” or as we locals call it, the “big blue hole”. Several 14000 foot peaks literally block the spillover and we usually miss any precipitation that falls in all directions around us but yesterday we got lucky. First time in 2 YEARS for a decent rainfall, and more rain and hopefully snow is expected over the next several days. One good winter rain is enough to give us wildflowers carpeting the desert this spring.
I knew deep in my heart that Lily would be returned. That lady was looking for a sweet lap cat. That’s SO not our girl.
We had great rain starting mid afternoon but I don’t know if it lasted much longer than 11 PM because I passed out.It did snow quite a bit over Zion and the Pine Valley Mtns, though. Once the sun comes up, I’ll be able to see how much.
Lily’s back, and all is well again. Thank you, Graham Harrop. On another note, saw four golden crowned kinglets, three varied thrushes, and a wren while out walking today.

An extremely happy ending to this arc – I’m still a little uneasy over what the buildup could mean…
