In the mid 70s, I bought a pair of ice climbing pants. I didn’t ice climb, but I did have to wait on the corner for the bus to work and I didn’t see any reason to be cold while doing it. They were bright red (to be easily seen in an avalanche) and fit over your regular pants. I had had a lot of experience with cold in boot camp (Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Jan. and Feb.. The first week I was there it got above zero for one hour. Anyway. one day I got to work in the morning, and while waiting for the elevator, a woman asked me, “Those are warm, aren’t they?” I told yes, very warm. She said, “I always thought you looked ridiculous in those until I realized that I am cold and you are not” I soon saw people coming to work wearing ski pants.
Onsies have a certain logistical problem in the bathroom, I’ve worn overalls all of my working life, and they are the same in that respect. A “Working Onesie” if you will.
I wonder if the Woman ever got on of those “Snuggies” that were all the rage about a decade back. Her fleeced “onsie” looks like an upgrade on the snuggie, which always reminded me of Obi-Wan Kenobi. They were like a sleeved fleece blanket and came in a wide assortment of colors. At the same time that crazy guy “Vince” was marketing his “shamwow” towels on TV and the late Billy Mays had infomercials on Oxi-Clean, Orange-Glo and Mighty-Putty (the oxi-clean products are actually very good, Mays used to do some of his commercials in Tampa area malls or over at the Home Shopping Network in St Pete) while Eric Estrada tried to sell people land in places like Hot Springs Village Arkansas. The late night infomercials were quite popular back then and obviously some of them sold quite well. I guess we can thank Ron Pompeil of Ronco for starting the trend way back in the ’70s.
This is weird. I just posted this and now I don’t see it! I posted this message from Georgia yesterday but it was so late, I wanted to post it again. "Eight years ago today I posted the first BCN strip on our original site!I had drawn it in about five minutes, after Lupin knocked a shelf down, Elvis and Puck came running into the room, and I had done some old Timey reporter voices for them. This strip and the ones to follow would soon be shared all over the Internet and slapdash art style would stick I then spent the next year or so slowly evolving it into the style I wanted for the comic! I wouldn’t change a thing, it all happened when and how it should have! Still, look at the difference in the artwork from then! Wow! It pays to do a second draft if you sketch something funny out on printer paper and folks seem to like it. Thank you so, SO much to everyone who has read and loved and supported the comic these past eight years!!! Time absolutely flies by when you’re having fun, this all still feels so new to me in a terrific way! I am so grateful to get to write and draw these stories for you every day! Thank you for loving the characters and tales and laughing at the jokes with me. And thank you for making the community and comments around BCN so kind, funny, and warm. Much love to you all!!
I just love a grinning Elvis popping out in the last panel.
Also, for those who asked yesterday, please feel free to use “mustcessity” as much as you want. Paul would be very pleased to know his malapropisms are appreciated. I’d have answered in yesterday’s strip, but I got “Smudged”.
This is certainly better than my solution, which is to wrap blankets around myself and walk from room to room like a blue-striped Grim Reaper. Certainly does not make for good kitchen dance parties or cat tucking, but everyone looks so happy!
It’s got a great hoodie capable of carrying a smallish passenger (Puck?). And having attached footies would make it a true Onesie. Loving Elvis’ smile. Absolutely joyous. Thanks for this GD.
YAH!!!!!! The Mrs has a onesie like that. Warm and fleecy and with pockets and a hood. And a cat like Elvis who wants to snuggle. Her snuggle kitty is a little Tuxedo, but the idea is the same. He was on her lap or in her hood al morning. Her t-shirt is another shade of green, though. Did The Woman and my Mrs. talk last night about what to wear this morning?
I haven’t worn a onesie since I was a child. As others have mentioned, having to strip to use the bathroom – especially in cold weather – is a NOT, NEVER, NO HOW, NO WAY! Also as much as I loved my footie pajamas, things like that aren’t long enough for me (I’m not unusually tall, so you’d think they would – but they don’t). Still, they are very cute.

Have they always lived on the east coast? Why did I picture them on the north west…Washington or Oregon?

That onsie material would compliment any of the cats but especially Goldie should she decide she needs a place to snooze away 10-12 hours.

Written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King: One Fine Day
One cold day as winter turns to spring
I’ll wear my onesie and be as warm as anything!
One cold day, I’ll wear my one-piece PJs!
…….
It has pockets, and lots of room
I can just sleep right through
Any Doom and Gloom!
On cold days, I wear my one-piece PJs!
…….
Though the day is cold and brisk outside
In my one-PJs I don’t need to hide!
I can lounge and dance as I please,
And include my favorite
Siamese!
…….
One cold day as winter turns to spring
I’ll wear my onesie and be as warm as anything!
One cold day, I’ll wear my one-piece PJs!
