Oh dear, rainstorms (thunder or otherwise) are only fun if you are safe and DRY, preferably with electricity.

Ooh! Perhaps the station will have house…er, apartment-guests until the leak is patched! That would certainly distract Elvis…

Also, Goldie got a matching raincoat!

That would be so much fun if Tabitha and Sir Figaro seek shelter from the storm in the BCN apartment.

We’ve had cats that were terrified of thunder and would run into the basement and hide behind our steamer trunks.

We have thunder often and we’ve had two cats that didn’t like it. Simon was a real sensitive fraidy cat and hid when ever there was thunder and sometimes when it rained just in case it thundered. He taught Manny that it was best to hide if there was thunder. Simon has cross the rainbow bridge, but Manny remains convinced that hiding is the best course of action during thunder.

The roof guy finally came round to look at our roof. We’ve had a few leaks. Also wall leaks when the water from the back sloshed up around the weep holes. But the bit of carpet that got damp is dry now. We think ourselves lucky. There are plenty of people with soggy furniture piled in front of their houses.

My cat, Cara Mia, is afraid of rain. The sound of it on the skylight terrifies her. My orange cat, who died 2-1/2 years ago, was also afraid of the sound of rain. She was also afraid of the garbage trucks driving up the street. I think maybe the trucks sound a little like growling. The rain doesn’t faze my other cats.

Loaner Cat could care less. The only time I’ve ever seen her jump at anything is if there’s a really, really loud popper in the fireplace. But she doesn’t go anywhere, she just takes it in stride. My Blue Boy on the other hand (Doberman) is afraid of the rain, the thunder, lightning, poppers in the fireplace, the fire in the fireplace, the horrible wind storm we had this past week, the mixer in the kitchen until I can convince him there will be a cookie for him, the pans making noise on the stove…when our Red Girl died, his confidence died with her.

Our first dog, Simba , used to growl at thunder, and bark when it got closer. He was a big German Shepard. We’d bring him in the family room, and he’d calm down. Our cat, Salem , would just wrap himself in Simba’s tail or sleep near his face.

Our current flock of rescue dogs and cats seem nervous, but keep them with us and they are fine. One of the cats (used to be feral) doesn’t even blink in thunder. Not that we see too many of them in Newport or Huntington Beach.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David, performed to B. J. Thomas: Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on my Head

Raindrops keep falling on my head

It seems that the roof is leaking and the storm has spread

    Thunder and more rain!

Those raindrops keep falling on my head they keep falling!

    …….

So I just called up my downstairs kitty friends

And I said it looks as though this storm will never end!

    Not sure what to do!

Those raindrops keep falling on my head they keep falling!

    …….

But there’s one thing I know

I have friends I can depend on

    ‘Til this rain’s gone

If we need a helping paw from dusk until dawn.

    …….

Oh, raindrops keep falling on my head

But that doesn’t mean we really have anything to dread

    Worry’s not for me, ’cause

I’m never gonna get anywhere by fretting

Because, you see, friends are there for me!

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

    In the Royal Kitchen

Violet-Ifa: Here’s a wheel of cheese and some loaves of bread for the picanic basket, Thomios.

Thomios: This will make a great lunch for your exploration. How did you get all these foods?

Violet-Ifa: A Royal Procurer never tells.

Thomios: Fair enough. I have heard the ancient archives contain scrolls of recipes from the famous chef, Floofnet the Joyous. It would be wonderful to continue his legacy.

Violet-Ifa: But I’m sure he wouldn’t hold a candle to your kibble pie! Even we Royal Procurers enjoy it.

    Enter Puckmosis

Puckmosis: Is the picanic basket all packed?

Thomios: Yep. With food fit for Royalty.

Puckmosis: Then we’ll gather everyone together and start our journey!

If water is leaking into the upstairs apartment, that means it’s also getting into the attic. Is nobody concerned about the RCO News team? There is so much interesting stuff in that attic. I’d hate to see it all get ruined.

I hope this will turn into a cross-apartment adventure, perhaps ending with all seeking shelter in the laundry room, or more intriguingly the vacant first floor.

It just occurred to me that I’ve never made mention of the Upstairs Dogs. The Boy and The Girlfriend have two dogs … I forget the breed, but they’re all white and about the size I imagine BCN’s Trevor to be. They collectively live in the loft that is the second floor of our house. Zeus and Finn still aren’t quite housebroken, which is why they are not given free rein of the house. They’re not particularly fond of thunder, either.

We had the joyous discovery this weekend that our roof is poorly designed!

There is no overhang and parts of the siding have sagged, so imagine our surprise when over the weekend during a nice thawing temperature, we had water pouring in from the top of the window sill in the living room… and a puddle of water under a window in our room- which I discovered when standing on the carpet and felt my socks become wet! Rainstorms over summer and fall did not reveal this issue, so it is likely something that just happens once the snow and ice on the roof start thawing.

When we purchased over the summer, it was literally the only thing in our price range move-in ready. Everything else either needed a new septic put in, needed a complete renovation, or had need of complete re-wire and plumbing. We had a strict time frame and budget.

Add in Covid restrictions, etc, it would have been months before getting a septic company out or an electrician. We considered renting until my husband could get in 2 years at his new career so we could get another mortgage, but there weren’t even available rentals!

Now we have the wonderful discovery that a lot of roofing companies here are completely booked out til August because of the wind storm we had back in December. Not to mention, the place honestly is not worth putting on an expensive metal roof, or having them completely tear down the old one to put on a new decking that will hang over.

Unsure what to do at this point! But thankful that we have shelter.

At the apartment complex where I live, they would only patch leaks. Finally a few years ago, they redid the roof. I got home from work and wondered why my trash can was in the living room. I finally looked up and saw the new patch. Come to find out that one of the roof guys…..made a hole where it had leaked for a long time. He was fine.

I received the PurrfectPals Winter newsletter yesterday in the mail. It had a picture of Lupin in the In Honor and In Memory section. It is the one of him sitting on the table next to a painting Georgia did of invisible Lupin for Zazzle (it is the painting on the pillow in the Zazzle link below).

My cats are only afraid of Tuesday mornings, when three different pre-historic garbage trucks roam the neighborhoods with their awful clashing cries and backward beeps over a period of 90 minutes. It takes Colette fifteen minutes to stand down and be ready to resume walking with me, after one of them comes through.

We had a whopper of a storm race through last night — horizontal rain, wind howling like a freight train, house shaking! It only lasted about 10-15 minutes, but the power went out, there are trees down everywhere… it was wild!
