This reminds me of when I helped my uncle coach the little league ( little guys ) , the ball was hit and all of the players raised their gloves up and the " ball " almost always hit the ground , just a riot : )
Well first of all, no projectile would be following a line from the sun to the kid to be focused at the point of landing. Second, the shadow would not be significantly distancing itself from the light source to change size. Third, the point … oh, who has time to mess with creative license? I guess ignorance is funnier than effort.
It isn’t the sun glare or the ball aiming at the kid. It’s the possibility that he will disappoint all the people who are staring at him and depending on him to catch it. If he’s been there before, he knows what follows a bobble.
Dude, I feel your pain, I’d be running away too. Perhaps why I never played baseball or any other sport for that matter, except when we had to in gym class.
Overthinking guys. Put the big oiled up glove in the path of the ball. It helps to know what to do with it after that. Which is why I never got anywhere in sports.

Maybe a less violent sport would be more your style. Speed chess comes to mind.

I wondered why the ball seemed to be getting bigger, then it hit me!

I hate to tell you, but the shadow size does not change.

That’s why I was never any good at games with balls. Imputing malevolence to sporting equipment kind of spoils the fun.

Except the shadow doesn’t change size.

He didn’t understand why the ball seemed to be getting bigger, and then it hit him.

Try adding bad astigmatism to it. In the two years I played little league, I never once caught a ball.
