When I worked in the bank, we opened Christmas Club accounts. Depositors put in a set amount each week & in December the accounts were automatically closed & a check sent. We had a woman who was well up in age & opened one every year. Totally optimistic!
Had a boyfriend once who was terrified of psychics, palm readers, etc. I asked him why and he told me it was because of a cartoon he saw of a palm reader telling a man, “The good news is you’re going to Heaven. The bad news is you’re leaving tomorrow.”
One of my favorites was an actress on a soap that did the commercials for a psychic phone line. When the actress who originated the role decided to come back & she was let go, she moaned about it happening without warning. Lots of letters to editors & other places (pre Facebook, Twitter etc,) asking why her psychic hadn’t warned her.
I was talking to Ray Hyman over the weekend. Ray is one of the founders of the modern skeptic’s movement, along with James Randi and Richard Dawkins. Ray used to work as a psychic and palm reader. On a bet, he started giving people that were exactly the opposite of what traditional palmistry predicted. His success rate was just as good if not better. That’s what lead him to study psychology, and eventually become a skeptic.
