Our local hardware warehouses have had their Christmas stuff up the day after Labor Day.

The grocery store where I work has had Christmas stuff out for weeks

If it comes in it needs to go out, nothing sells from the back room

It won’t be too much longer before the Valentines candy starts coming in

I always said there should be year round Xmas, Easter, etc sections in stores. By the time HALLOWEEN comes, though, the candy is stale…Ew

I remember when Christmas decorations didn’t go up until the day after Thanksgiving.

Same for all 3 events. Holidays were taken in their normal order. There were unspoken but familiar routines that meant one anticipated Hallowe’en then Thanksgiving then Christmas without being constantly beaten over the head with sales ads. Worse than political ads before elections. If tv’s didn’t have mute and fast forward buttons, who knows what effect that would have on civilization?

We take down the Halloween decorations this week except for the pumpkin coloured ceramic Sponge Bob. He stays out, per directive from SWMBO, until the American Thanksgiving decorations go out, which this year will be about the 11th. She has already snuck out some little snowflakes in preparation for Xmas. On the 18th and 19th I get to hang the lights and test the lights. On the 20th I am doing nothing except watch the Grey Cup. I hope it’s a snowy game.

As I get older the decorations are less. This year I only put out a large lit fake pumpkin and Christmas will be a projector or two.
