The point, I think, is to get us all moving the same direction for awhile. Herd mentality in humans involves “celebration”.

Or is Earth Day a time that we can feel good about caring when we don’t even do what we should?

Earth day is for corporations to primp and pose on how green they are while doing the exact opposite to maximize their shareholders profits!

Earth survives. We don’t

Earth Day is like the US 4th of July, where we celebrate our supposed progress with colorful displays and (continuing) loud destruction.

In the words of the late George Carlin: “the planet is fine, the people are f*@%$#…”

so, is all that talk coming from Cleveland?

Earth Day brings back wonderful memories. One of my fondest memories was the last 10 years that I taught in a public school. My 4th grade students came to me one day and complained about the smell coming from the creek that flows next to our school. After exploring some ideas, the children wanted to know who should we call to have it cleaned up. That was a beginning of a 10 year project to clean up the creek. Each year, my students would organize a creek cleanup day. Along the way we learned about macro invertebrates, frogs, and other environmental indicators, that depended on the little creek. When the dreaded purple loosestrife invaded our creek one year, we grew samples in our classroom and tested which insects would eat the purple loosestrife to help manage it. We found one beetle who only ate purple loosestrife so we raised a bunch of beetles and set them loose in our creek. Then we monitored the growth of the purple loosestrife from year to year. A few students of those years, I’m glad to say, went on to environmental professions.

But what shape will ‘mother’ be in when we’re gone?

Nature bats last.

4th of July isn’t about congratulating ourselves about the world we built. It’s a celebration of our Indepence from the ruling class of the British Empire.

Why does Earth Day fall on SUNday?

It’s an opportunity to reflect on how all the catastrophes predicted by the chicken littles 53 years ago haven’t actually come true after all.

Oh, is today Corporate Greenwashing Day again? Yay greed and PR!!

And what’s that about the planet ‘outliving’ us? I’m sure the ball of rock will still be around after humanity has extinguished itself, but it’s maybe 50/50 whether anything will be living on it.

George Carlin’s (RIP) theory was that the Earth is treating humans as an infection and will do whatever’s necessary to eliminate that infection.

The goal of the Earth is Life. . . . . It doesn’t have to be Human. . . . For 160 million years the dominant species was Lizards, then “Mom” hit the reset button with the Chicxulub meteor. Modern Humans have been around for about 200,000 years. “Mother Nature” is not afraid to correct a mistake, don’t p*ss her off.

Nothing says ecological responsibility like the Solo Stove Messa I see advertised every 20 minutes. It can incinerate anything that can fit inside a Tin Can! Coming soon – shredded tire attachment to release maximum carbon and toxins into the atmosphere.

Wouldn’t bet on the hundreds of billions of years, right now.

Earth is here for us. Not the other way around. Steward it well, but don’t worship it
