Calvin is oblivious to the fact that people would have observed calves nursing essentially the same way human babies do, so people would have realized that the liquid that comes from cows would hardly be the “mysterious”, potentially dangerous/awful substance he implies.
i wasn’t there but i am betting that humans started borrowing a cup of milk from the Goats in order to feed their babies when mom’s milk wasn’t dropping.
These are actually really interesting questions that Calvin is asking. Along with “who was the genius who invented sausages?” And “who invented string?”
In my opinion, string technology was more important than the wheel. Holds human life together. With string and knots, you can tie the goat skin round your waist and protect the essentials. You can tie your stone axe head onto the wooden handle, and then attach the whole thing to the string round your waist so your hands are free. Tie a big string to a log, and three or four blokes can concentrate their strength on one part of the log to move it. Then someone with an IQ of 180 will invent the bow.
I say the same thing about lobster. Think about how hungry the first guy to eat one must have been. “Look at this weird, ugly thing with the monster claws. I wonder how it would taste served boiled with some clarified butter to dip it in?” Don’t get me wrong, I love lobster – I live smack dab in the middle of lobster fishing central. We pack live lobsters and put pallets full of them on airplanes to ship all over the world.
I think this was the strip that Watterson himself included in his 10th anniversary book, where he said that he really had that thought: “Who was that guy?”
Something I’ve been wondering is what people would see if they could see Hobbes walking behind Calvin with his own bowl of cereal? Possibly, they would see Hobbes in Calvin’s arms and would only see Calvin’s bowl of cereal. But what would happen when Calvin and Hobbes were both at the table? Would they then see that Hobbes has his own bowl of cereal? As I said earlier, I agree with Calvin that some things do seem weirder the more that you think about them.
As a human, I do not consume breast fluid from other species. If our bodies needed to drink milk we would never ween off of our mothers. Dairy consumption increases the risk of several chronic diseases. If you are interested in the science, go to:
Apparently cattle, sheep, and goats produce milk whose fat content is roughly similar to humans’ which is why we milk them and not other domesticated mammals like horses or pigs. And of the three, cows are by far the most productive.
I too thought it was weird when I was a kid that people drank what I thought of as breast milk for calves. Later, when I learned they separated the calves from their mothers soon after birth I thought it was cruel.
I’ve seen Calvin’s quote from this particular strip a lot on websites over the years, but not actually attributed to this strip. It’s so commonplace that it’s hard to believe it actually originated here.
When I was in my late teens and early ’20s my friends and I had this conversation about alcohol and a large number of other more or less naturally occurring drugs.

What’s especially weird is that there’s recent evidence humans started drinking cow milk BEFORE we evolved the ability to digest lactose.
