That was quite sharp compared to other strips, though it seems a bit unreasonable of Mrs. Godfrey to say that Nate should’ve known the real reason why she assigned him to tutor Chester.
So, what this arc was about was a plan to scare Nate straight in courtesy of Chester, all so he could pass this exam with a better score than usual?
Yeah, doesn’t P.S. 38 have strict rules against bullying? Because Mrs. Godfrey outright created a situation where Chester’s bullying would be painted as justified, where Chester threatened to harm Nate should he get a low exam score. So, what Mrs. Godfrey did was outright hypocritical and against school rules since she was deliberately setting Nate up to be bullied by another student.
This twist where it was all for Nate to pass makes no sense. I mean, Nate should take school more seriously, but he hasn’t had any trouble passing Mrs. Godfrey’s class in a long time, so scaring him straight is completely unnecessary. Plus, since this school has no tolerance for bullying, Nate shouldn’t even be put through this to begin with.
Well that’s quite a twist. We don’t know if Chester will really pass, but at least Nate passed. Though now Nate will think up a pretty brutal Prank Day prank to pull on Mrs. Godfrey to get back at her for that cruel setup.
Well, I guess that’s a cool twist! I don’t have much to say, outside of Godfrey potentially endangering Nate for this sucks but hey it was nice to see Nate work hard?
I’m sure Mrs Godfrey copied Chester in on the plan. Remember he didn’t even look at the test papers when the test started. Don’t think Nate was in any danger.
I said this some months back that I thought the real or underlying reason that Mrs. Godfrey has always been so hard and ruthless on Nate is that she knows that he is actually quite intelligent but refuses or more often neglects to do the work to actually display it.
….on a SERIOUS note: Clever, lady! Veeeeery clever….kind of like Myagi with that “show me: wax on, wax off, show me sand the floor” thing with Daniel…….
I can relate. I remember in college, a friend asked me to tutor her in Linear Algebra because she knew I had taken it. I agreed to do it in exchange for home-cooked dinners. I must say, you never learn a subject so thoroughly as when you must teach it to someone else! I always made sure to be one section ahead of her in the textbook, doing all the homework problems, and that made me look like a genius because I knew how to solve all the problems. I was studying the subject more than she had to (and more than I had to when I took the class myself), just so I could be a good tutor.
What has happened is that Big Nate – despite how smart and clever he is for his age – just got hustled by his worst enemy, Mrs. Godfrey. Hustled in a good way.
Nate doesn’t have to go to summer school – in fact, he is getting excellent grades.
Say what you will about Mrs. Godfrey….
…..she does what she does, and that’s teaching.
And if it means manipulating Nate to tutor a schoolyard bully, all the while he’s ready to excel on his finals.
For all of us who want to twist this into what we want it to be, we just need to remember: This is Big Nate; it’s a comic strip; and this was pretty goddam funny!!
