Smudge has been keeping his distance so far. Yesterday he sauntered into the living room and hopped up on the window sill. He dozed off, lost his balance and fell into a tangle of sleeping kittens. A general hissing match ensued. Who woulda thunk month old kittens could hiss that loud?
I did not know they hisss. Maybe, because they don’t see very well, that is a defensive mechanism. Or they are just annoyed at being disturbed. Not only is this cartoon entertaining but educational as well.
Georgia’s talent shines in all things from the colorful, detail-filled peep-frog summer dance panel to this strip with simple lines providing eyebrow expressions for Lupin. I love her creativity! BCN is a great start to my day. :-)
I looked up moles and discovered they eat worms and insects. It’s very rare they’ll eat plant roots but of course they cause damage going after the worms. Robin, I also learned that Australia has a marsupial mole!
At the refuge I used to volunteer at we called owls “cat swallowers” as the hissed too. We would joke with tours that they were in as the cat they had swallowed was a bit angry. :D
Boy, I have been really lax in noticing toebeans lately. I don’t notice until someone mentions them in the comments. Am I somehow cured of the toebean addiction? I still EEE! when I see them, but I just can’t see them until someone else points them out. Do I need counseling? Toebeans Anonymous to get back my addiction?
They hiss when they spring a leak from kitty and dog teeth. I can’t count the number of mole and vole “presents” I have received over the years. I appreciate them because it means way less ankle breaking hazards in the yard.
Hello Washington state/Pacific Northwest readers! Another local library talk is coming up, this time in September! On Saturday September 16th I’m going to give a talk at 2pm at the Kenmore Library! You can find information for the event with this link: https://kcls.bibliocommons.com/events/6499d42afab24b4100e05324 (Copy/paste the link into a browser!) I’m posting the FB event on the BCN FB in a few moments too, if that might be easier for FB users. Hope to see you there!
I just coincidently finished reading Janet Kagan’s book Mirabile (available on Amazon as an ebook) about settlers on an alien planet and their problems with their imported earth animals, including a bit about moles.

I mean, of the two ends the moles could have air coming out of, a hiss is probably the less-rude option.

Also, panel 2 is adorable. Quizzical Lupin! What a cutie!

Is the mole in panel 3 one of the other moles or did the first mole lose their hat?

I think an intermediary is required.

I did not know that moles hiss. Of course, the only ones that I have any experience with were dug out of the ground by our hunter cat.
They were no longer terribly communicative.

Oh bother. I made a perfectly wonderful pun about the posteriorly emitted hissing sounds, but it wouldn’t pass the “banned word” list.

I’ll admit, I had not prior to this given much thought to which noises moles make. These do make some sense.

Talpi Mole: Thanks for the use of the round potatoes. Best game of Lawn Potatoes ever.
Trevor-Hotep: Glad they worked out. They also make delicious potato salad.
Talpi: Eating potatoes? Who’d a thunk?
Thomios: I put an extra shrimp on the barbie for you, Bill.
Bill Platypus: Much obliged, mate.
Serfig-Aro: The food is ready! Everyone line up!
Puckmosis: I like the concept of the hot dog. I think I’ll try one for a new experience.
Thomios: Strange. I thought I’d grilled more hot dogs.
Ora Z: You did.

Pink house is a very, very, very fine house
With ten moles in the yard
Though greeting them is hard
No, interviews aren’t easy ‘cause they’re rude
Bea waits
La-la, la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la, la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la
She’s a spitfire
While they hiss and glower in her face
Oh, moles, not today
