One might be able to pass an ethics exam by turning in a blank paper.

This seems like a really complex topic when Calvin discusses it, but honestly, I would take well-deserved failure over undeserved success.

Everyone fails at some point, and you can’t succeed without failing first. Donald Trump and Elon Musk are two perfect examples of people who succeeded for doing the wrong thing, like Calvin said.

He can simply be the next avant-garde artist. Except he can also do it on a blank canvas, calling it a painting. Or on an untouched block of marble, calling it a sculpture. Or on a blank wall, calling it a mural. And don’t even get me started on lumps of clay. Wait… Lumps of Clay? Yes! Is that gonna be the name of my new Emo band? Yup, distorted guitar and whiny lyrics? Brilliant! Thanks, Calvin!

12 years of public schools, 7 years of college, 2 years of graduate school and I never had an “ethics test”. Maybe because I majored in math … but I also majored in Art History and Art, and minored in Anthropology and Music, with some incursions into English, so that wasn’t it. It was probably because schools don’t teach ethics. The world might be a better place if they did.

I love the artwork, the expressions, and the style of this strip. I especially love the fact that the main punchline is delivered in a little picture-in-picture frame (with the follow-up punchline in the final frame). I don’t remember seeing another comic that did that.

If I were his ethics teacher, and he explained the blank page this way, I’d say he learned a lot about ethics and give him an A.

I remember reading about a classic old ethics exam

    Professor writes on board WHY?

Students read it and turn to each other in confusion and helplessness. Began scribbling frantically.

    Except one.

Student WHY NOT!! Turned in his paper. He left.

Professor smiled. He earned his 4 points.

I am reminded of a story (unknown if it is real, but it’s fun, at least in my opinion) about a final exam for a college-level philosophy class. The professor placed his chair on top of his desk, and told his students, “For the next three hours, I want you to prove to me that this chair exists.”

The story ends with only one student receiving an “A”. The student’s exam sheet said, “What chair?”
