I like and agree with the first: “Kindness is its own reward”. I know that I always feel good after being kind to someone. I know some people want a reward for doing the right thing, like in Big Nate last week when they found and returned a wallet. I’ve never really understood the second, “No good deed goes unpunished”. (The phrase “No good deed goes unpunished” is a sardonic commentary on the frequency with which acts of kindness backfire on those who offer them. In other words, those who help others are doomed to suffer as a result of their helpfulness.) Wikipedia. Would someone who does a good deed be looked down on by others as being a “do-gooder”?
I keep saying people want everything to fit in nice, neat little boxes, all tied up with ribbons and bows, but reality is messy beyond our comprehension.
Only if the universe is self-aware, Pig. If you make an aphorism in a vacuum, does it make a sound? Only the tree falling in a forest with nobody around to hear it knows for sure. 8>)
Those really don’t contradict each other. If kindness is its own reward, you should not expect external factors to give you any kind of positive result.
There are many wise@sses who have discovered no effort ways to be perfectly happy. Which they will sell to all comers for a modest fortune. It usually consists of selling copies of their system to everyone you know, keeping 10% and sending them the other 90% until you pay off.

The maxim, “No good deed goes unpunished”, has a corollary, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
