It is justified, if it helps achieve a worthy goal. At his age, Dr. Spaetzle is taking the right course, and, better yet, he is enjoying it. Both good benefits.
Caulfield is taking a ‘narrow’ view, but then, he’s got a few years to go before he gets the age/health thing.
When you have 2 jobs and either one can pay your bills, you have money left over for gear that may or may not be useful. (And extra books for the school library as well)
For me it’s all about steps. The goal is 10,000 per day, rarely make it there but usually average well above 6,000 and every long once in a while do 11,000 (nearly 4.6 miles) including all activity during the day as well as intentional walks eight decades in. Use it or loose it.
Why does he keep bugging him for walking and doing a good thing? What does it matter that he isn’t going far away? He should be proud of him instead. And it looks like he may only have bought a good pair of shoes.

Specialized gear is awesome, but only if you actually have a need for it. Otherwise it’s next year’s tag sale.

I used to think gear didn’t matter until I bought a pair of running tights. Now I jog even faster in the morning, before someone sees me.

Dr Spaetzle is cool. He is achieving his goals.

Why is the distance the guy walks even an issue? It’s a non-story relentlessly beaten to an unfunny pulp.

An hour a day consistently can make a huge transformation to your health!

I was expecting that Mr. Spaetzle’s belly would be at least a bit less protuberant by this point.

I’m impressed that Mr Spaetzle can walk 3.2 miles in less than an hour every day, he doesn’t look that fit

Smart as he is, this kid has a serious tin ear problem sometimes.

I agree with the person who said kids in this strip, like Caulfield, need to be more supportive of the adults.

He’d best be careful, California is going to be hit by the first tropical storm since 1939, and it will severely impact the trails in the Sierra.
