Please remember alligators never really develop a fondness for humans other than as meals. You cannot have one as a real pet. They will either fear you or they will want to eat you. We have plenty of them around me. I am glad I am too large to swallow. Most never even nibble.
I look at the art prior to reading…The second frame had me confused. It looked like Janis was getting a piggyback ride while in distress or very tired. I figured their pleasant walk was a lot longer than anticipated or a sprained ankle… even after reading the text I needed about 5 seconds to comprehend what was spoken.
My aunt lives where there are a lot of alligators. The ones I saw stayed away from humans. Came up on the bank and just hung around and went right back into the water if someone approached.
Coasts are beautiful, but also very hard these days to get insurance on a dwelling. Much smarter, if you can’t afford to self insure, to live in the center of the state.
There’s something anywhere you live. Perhaps the folks in that area would be freaked out by black bears scratching their backs on the corner of their homes :)
I wonder if Janis and Arlo are old enough to be gone when the c hits the fan and storms, rising seas and temperatures, make living there undesirable.
I was talking to a friend in Florida yesterday and she said the game in San Diego is the first time her team has ever had to cancel for a hurricane—at an away game! My reaction was, yeah, but at least no alligators.
I do love that the 2 families have blended so well. The reintroduction of Mary Lou and her family back in 2008 remains one of my favorite arcs of this strip.

Unforeseen drawbacks. There’s always something bad mixed in with the good.

Not to mention the humidity. Dripping sweat night and day when outdoors.

I’ve just never wanted to live in a place with large carnivorous wild reptiles.

There’s nothing like having small dinosaurs as part of your nature walk.

Nothing takes the shine off an idyllic spot much faster than alligators or pythons in the pool.
