I have had that happen, but it was mostly due to poor stocking. They did not have what I went to the market for. I made the trip so I should buy something?
Shortly after we were married, (1977), we were moving into a new apartment and realized we didn’t have a wastebasket. My went to Montgomery Ward to get one. She came back with a microwave oven. And no wastebasket. This basic kind of peculiarity showed up occasionally over the next 46 years.
one Thanksgiving my ex sent me to store for some more thyme, and took my 2 grandsons with me, 45 minutes later we were back, spent $50+ and forgot the thyme
I’m not forgetful. My problem is that I add items to my shopping list as I think of what I need to buy, without considering where those items are in the store. I TRY to scan the whole list while I’m pushing the cart around, but sometimes I end up at one end of the store and the last thing on the list is at the OTHER end, so I just decide to do without it until my next shopping trip. (I shop at a large store, so it is quite a hike from one end to the other.)
I once went in a Dollar General to get two items but I think they had a minimum purchase requirement so I got two other items. Somehow I left the store with the additional items and left the first pair. The cashier should have somehow made sure I got both bags. I was on a long trip and didn’t realize until I got home.

You always forget that one item you were looking for. I’ll have to get that container of trail mix tomorrow.

He forgot to buy a pack of gum .. and .. a pair of pants.

Would make more sense if the groceries were at home instead of still at the store.

I just bought a gallon of milk. It was the cheapest one I’ve bought in a long time, only $17. Usually runs me more than $50.
