Genesis 1:28 “And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”
We are to enjoy the Earth and use it properly, not destroy it.
Remember the good ol’ days when “suck” when applied to a person as an insult was considered an abbreviated profanity and would have earned a three day suspension from school?
I’m not opposed to eating shark, I’d happily eat a shark, but the fact most of the shark is wasted and made to suffer bothers me to my core. If you’re going kill something, make it quick and use as much of it as possible.
I googled “How many sharks are killed a year?” and here is part of the answer that came up: The International Fund for Animal Welfare reports that every year, humans kill around 100 million sharks.
This also came up: People also ask: “How many sharks are left in the world?” Here’s part of the answer: it is believed that there are approximately 100 million sharks in the world.
I did make the point earlier this week that humans kill far more sharks than sharks kill humans. They were saving that fact as an important point to end this arc with.
Wiz is being inappropriately high-and-mighty since he has a flying dragon for a pet that lays waste to the countryside. But, that is like what Jesus said, “Why do you see the splinter in another’s eye, but not the 2×4 in your own?”
I’m not sure I believe that statistic. If 100 million sharks are killed every year……..every year, that means the oceans are so full of sharks, you walk across the water on their backs. They’d be so many sharks nothing else in the ocean would be alive. Another cartoonist trying to get political.
And most murdered by the Chinese who think EVERYTHING is an medicinal. BTW in most cases, the skarks are caught, the fin cut off and then they are released…alive…to die a slow painful death. Well documented. Bear bile is another thing they collect. The bear is kept in a VERY small cage, and a catheter inserted to collect the bile. The bear is in constant agony. Yes I am descriptive, on purpose, so you realize the pain humans inflict on animals…for no reason.
In Pearls Before Swine a few days ago, Goat says to Rat “Sharks only kill about 10 humans a year, but humans kill 100 million sharks. What does that tell you?” Rat’s answer was “That we should have killed 10 more sharks.” (Of course, Rat is supposed to be a jerk. But I thought it was a good joke.)
Nobody seems to dare speak out where this abominable practice is coming from. China imports them for a prestige soup, just as they have harvested bears for their gall bladder (Chinese traditional medicine). (It’s gone on unchecked until Biden passed the Shark Fin Elimination Act in ‘22 to remove the US from this trade). And then there’s the Japanese whaling harvest, hiding under the guise of “scientific research” but, yeah, food.
It’s like it’s politically incorrect and/or racist to publicly call out Asian practices
Though mankind has a capacity for great evil, there’s the capacity for doing great good as well. If you think killing millions of sharks for their fines is abhorrent, how about what the Chinese Communists do in persecuting and murdering Falun Gong followers and the Uyghurs?
OK, to be clear, that’s a made up number. But all groups trying to stop shark killing use big numbers: I’ve seen 25 million, 63 million, 100 million (and 273 million, which nobody but one group uses). But that is a lot of sharks!
So here’s an article that explains why blaming it on shark fin soup is not fair. There are sharks less than a foot long, and the ones approaching the Jaws shark, and everything in between. But much of whatever number you use has nothing to do with sharks per se – but read the article. Half of you will complain about the source, the other half will take it as gospel. You’re both wrong, but if you pay attention, both sides will learn something. And maybe some of the other sides might learn something, too. I did.
