I’ll take the guy’s approach. When they are a certain age, you shower them with praise. That tells them they are doing something right. Kids are very binary young; either everythings right or everything’s wrong. Give them a good start.
I remember when my mother discouraged my 5-year-old brother from drawing. He drew a parody of the “Pogo” comic strip and was chastised for “plagiarism”. Seriously repressive move on Mom’s part. Never drew again.

I praise the effort. Like, “Wow, you’ve really worked hard on that and it shows! Good job!” Provided that they actually put in the effort, of course.
