For the 15 years before I retired, I had a great boss. He could do any job in the company from welding to engineering design. He kept meetings to a bare minimum. Because he knew I only came to him after exhausting other resources, he would immediately help when I asked and could usually solve my problem in a few minutes. I only saw him angry once during that time and he quietly fired the person who had deliberately refused to cooperate. If only we could all be so lucky.
I loved my last boss. She did just what a boss is supposed to do: coordinated what her underlings were doing, shifted work around when one person was swamped and another was free, insulated us as best she could from office-politics mishegaas above her. I might still be working for her if the company hadn’t decided to move its head offices down to Nashville.
