Fun bit of trivia: when I heard the Matchmaker song as a kid, I assumed it meant a match as in a thing you light fires with instead of a special someone.
You realize, of course, Hobbes is a stuffed toy brought to life only through Calvin’s vivid imagination. Now, stuffed toys cannot send valentines. Therefore, the only source of Calvin’s valentine is Calvin himself. Therefore, CALVIN wrote the valentine, CALVIN handed it to himself and CALVIN believes Susie is smitten with him.
Everything amazing about the Calvin and Hobbs Masterpiece is present in this strip. Great Comedy, great plot. Amazing Art. Amazing turn-arounds surprises that we all see coming but love none-the-less. The surreal nature of Hobbs and Calvin projecting his subconscious thoughts and dreams through him. Childhood, frivolity and fun. Thank you Bill Watterson for this amazing body of work. I need to open my complete Calvin and Hobbs and binge read again…..
Maybe my favorite C&H strip ever. So many laughs. Hobbes facial expressions. Calvin’s facial expressions. Cal’s hat flying off. “Muchas smoochies”. "My natural studliness. Susie’s hat and bots flying off. Hobbes singing. Genius
Susie’s comment on, “I didn’t send you…” is far better than Violet’s when she told something similar to Charlie Brown. “you smelly, snot-nosed troll…” hahahaha
I really think the answer is Calvin has a split personality. Explaining how Hobbes can do things that Calvin isn’t aware of. It might also explain his sociopathic behavior.
One of the best strips in a long while. Love the look on Hobbes’ face in panel six. Someday Susie will get her ultimate revenge…. by marrying Calvin. LOL…
Calvin’s ‘natural studliness’ remark is a reminder how conflicted he is over how he feels about Susie. Be grateful Watterson never showed when the hormones kicked in.
Hoo boy, do I have a LOT to say about this one! I love Hobbes’s faces in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eleventh panels! Hobbes’s Spanish accent in the fourth panel and mocking kiss in the sixth panel are also fun, along with his faux innocent singing in the eleventh panel. But yeah, he clearly devised the prank just to troll Calvin. And regarding Hobbes’s last line in the last panel…
“The world goes round day by day, and here we all are together!
I’m stuck with you, and you’re stuck with me, through good and stormy weather!"

It is a little early for a Valentine’s Day strip

Not only is Hobbes the smarter alter ego of Calvin, he’s also the sneakier one.

Hobbes’ facial expressions are priceless, especially in panel 6.

Another rockin’ arc. As Hobbes can’t write, it has to be Cal, who put down what he really feels about Susie.

I love Calvin’s comment about Susie’s fragile grip on reality. So ironic when he is the one talking to the stuffed tiger all the time.
